While Sigourney Weaver is currently filming Avatar: Fire and Ash, she’s hoping more people will discover a compelling drama she made in 1999 – a role that earned her a Golden Globe nomination.
Sigourney Weaver has starred in many different kinds of films, but she’s most famous for playing Ellen Ripley, the survivor battling the Xenomorph in Ridley Scott’s 1978 movie, Alien. Eight years later, James Cameron’s sequel, Aliens, solidified her legacy with its thrilling mix of action and horror.
Sigourney Weaver first worked with James Cameron in the 2009 film Avatar, playing Dr. Grace Augustine, the scientist leading the program that connected humans to the Na’vi people. She returned to the series in 2023’s The Way of Water, but this time as Kiri, Dr. Augustine’s fourteen-year-old Na’vi daughter, a completely different role.
In a recent interview with TopMob, Sigourney Weaver discussed the new Avatar film and shared a movie from 1999 that she feels deserves more recognition.
Sigourney Weaver wishes more fans had seen her work with Oscar-winner Julianne Moore

Weaver discussed her new movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, with TopMob, but also mentioned she’d love for more people to discover her 1999 film, A Map of the World, where she acted alongside Julianne Moore.
She expressed a wish that more people had seen her film, ‘A Map of the World,’ believing it featured one of her most compelling characters and was a truly excellent movie. She recently rediscovered it at a film festival and was reminded of its quality, saying she was very proud of the work. While acknowledging some of her films haven’t reached a wide audience, she maintains pride in all her projects and would gladly repeat the experience of making them.
In “A Map of the World,” Weaver portrays Alice Goodwin, a Wisconsin mother accused of child abuse after a young girl dies while playing at her home. Julianne Moore plays Theresa Collins, the girl’s mother and Alice’s friend. The film is a challenging watch, as Alice struggles with the accusations and the hostile reaction from her community following the tragedy.
I was so thrilled to see Sigourney Weaver get a Golden Globe nod for this movie! You can really tell how much she put into it, even though it didn’t get quite the same attention as some of her bigger blockbusters. And David Strathairn is fantastic in it too – I recognize him from films like The Bourne Ultimatum, L.A. Confidential, Nomadland, and Nightmare Alley. He’s always a great addition to any cast.
Weaver shared that she’s particularly proud of Avatar: Fire and Ash because, while it offers audiences a fun escape, it also feels grounded and relatable.
With so much conflict, displacement, and negativity in the world, this film offers an escape. It invites audiences to connect with a different world facing similar challenges and to see how its inhabitants navigate them with resilience, as Weaver described.
The actress said the Sully family’s bravery is what keeps drawing her back to the film. She’s already watched it three times in just two weeks and plans to see it again, amazed by what she witnesses each time. She considers it a personal treat to re-watch it.
