Christopher Nolan frequently focuses on ordinary people – husbands, boyfriends, or even just men with significant relationships – who suddenly find themselves with the fate of the world on their shoulders. These characters juggle personal responsibilities like family with the immense task of saving humanity, often prioritizing the greater good even if it strains their relationships. This isn’t a criticism; Nolan excels at this type of storytelling, and the first trailer for The Odyssey looks fantastic while staying true to his signature style.

If you’re familiar with Greek myths or the game Hades 2, you likely know the story of Odysseus, the brilliant strategist from the Trojan War whose journey home took an incredibly long time. Simply creating the Trojan Horse wasn’t enough – he also faced sea monsters, nymphs, a cyclops (who appears in the trailer!), and other dangerous creatures. The first trailer for Nolan’s film focuses heavily on Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, but we also see quick shots of Tom Holland as his son, Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway as his worried wife, Penelope. The relationship between Odysseus and Penelope – a husband struggling to return from war and a wife desperately wanting him home – feels perfectly suited to a Nolan film. The trailer ends with Penelope’s plea for him to come back, and his somber reply, “What if I can’t?”, captures the intense drama typical of Nolan’s leading men. The Odyssey is scheduled for release in mid-July 2026, so you have plenty of time to familiarize yourself with the characters and their stories.
