Be warned, this contains spoilers for episode 9 of Boston Blue season 1! Brandon Sonnier, the creator of Boston Blue, has explained why Danny made the unexpected decision to join the Boston Police Department, following the show’s biggest shock – a major character’s death. The series took a dramatic turn when Danny was offered a permanent role with the police. After considering it throughout the episode, he accepted the position to protect Jonah Silver, Lena’s half-brother, who killed mobster Flaherty while acting outside of the law.
In an interview with TV Insider, actor Sonnier explained that Danny’s choice to officially join the Boston Police Department in Boston Blue is motivated by his growing bond with the Silver family. He feels he needs to be the one in charge of Jonah’s case to keep him safe, and becoming a full-time officer is the only way to do that.
Throughout the episode, Danny wrestles with leaving the NYPD and starting over with the BPD. This is a major turning point for him, considering he’s spent his entire career with the NYPD and comes from a long line of NYPD commissioners. It felt necessary to portray this as a family decision he had to make. By the end of the episode, we see Jonah Silver in a difficult position – his family can’t investigate the crime because it involves a member of their own.
To really step up and take charge, he needs to officially become a member of the team, and we wanted that moment to be driven by his feelings and connection to his new family, rather than just the official process. Later in the season, we’ll show the details of him becoming a full Boston police officer and leaving the NYPD. But right now, it’s about him making an emotional decision to support the Silvers, his chosen family.
Regarding Jonah’s involvement, Sonnier acknowledged it’s currently unknown whether the main character from Boston Blue actually killed Flaherty, or just happened to be nearby and saw someone else commit the crime. He said episode 10 will provide more clarity, as Danny investigates and pieces together the truth about what happened to the mobster.
The winter premiere will focus on some great questions that Danny needs to answer as he revisits the crime scene, picking up right where we left off at the end of the last episode. Unlike most of our stories, this case will continue over two episodes, essentially becoming one long investigation that began in episode nine and continues in episode ten. We’ll finally see what happened in that room and learn more about the death of Sarah, Lena, and Jonah’s father, Ben Silver. This will raise questions about the motives behind his death, giving us a chance to solve the mystery and provide some definitive answers.
I’ve been tracking Flaherty ever since they let him out of prison – it was just a technicality, but he’s the man who killed my father, Ben Silver. Honestly, it feels like the only reason I’m doing this is to get justice for him. The episode ended with Danny unexpectedly finding them together, and now I’m left wondering exactly what went down between me and Flaherty. It’s a really unsettling cliffhanger.
Danny’s choice to take the job, made to protect Jonah, will significantly disrupt his personal life. This means strain on his relationship with Maria Beaz, which developed over the previous seasons, and distance from his family, with whom he’s very close.
Staying on the force also allows Danny to continue his close relationship with his son, Sean. With Boston Blue already renewed for another season, it was obvious he’d remain in the city. However, Jonah’s influence on his decision highlights just how strong his connection to the Silver family has become.
Even though the first season is only halfway finished, it’s still uncertain how much the death of Flaherty will affect the rest of the show, Boston Blue. Danny will try to shield Jonah, but the investigation could lead back to him, depending on the evidence. However, a new development might also emerge, potentially setting up a bigger story arc for the second half of the season.
Boston Blue returns February 27, 2026 on CBS.
