The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a huge part of pop culture over the last seventeen years. But before movies like Iron Man and Avengers: Endgame dominated the superhero genre, other adaptations of Marvel comics also captured audiences, though some were better than others.
The Ghost Rider movies, starring Nicolas Cage, are famously strange superhero films. Released in 2007 and 2011, these adaptations of the Marvel comic are known for being hilariously odd and are now available to stream for fans who enjoy a unique superhero experience.
The First Ghost Rider Is A Flawed-But-Fun Mess
Nicolas Cage has a remarkable talent: he almost always improves any movie he’s in. He’s incredibly charismatic and brings a special energy to everything he does, making even mediocre projects more enjoyable.
Nic Cage takes on all kinds of roles – comedies, dramas, action – and excels at them. Luckily, that’s what makes 2007’s Ghost Rider, which could have been a dull film, surprisingly entertaining – even if it’s a bit of a chaotic mess. And that’s definitely a good thing!
Nicolas Cage brings a unique and captivating energy to the role of Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider. While the movie Ghost Rider isn’t great overall – the villain is weak, the story is disjointed, and the special effects haven’t aged well – Cage’s performance alone makes it an enjoyable watch.
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Is An Improvement In Almost Every Way
Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the directors of the 2011 film Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, did a fantastic job creating a sequel that built upon the 2007 original by Mark Steven Johnson.
The filmmakers really leaned into the wild, over-the-top energy of Nicolas Cage’s performance and character, making everything else in the movie just as intense. It’s noticeably more energetic, aggressive, and strange than the first film, and you can tell Cage is completely enjoying himself in every moment.
Okay, so Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is completely over-the-top, and honestly, that’s what makes it awesome. They ditched a lot of the stuff that felt kinda bland in the first movie and just let Nic Cage go wild with the character. The action scenes are way better, it’s genuinely creepier, and even though the visuals are a little chaotic, they’re still really cool and grab your attention. It’s a fun ride!
Directors Neveldine and Taylor, known for action-packed films like Crank: High Voltage and Gamer, brought their signature style to the Ghost Rider sequel. As a result, it’s less serious and doesn’t delve as deeply into themes compared to other superhero movies. The Ghost Rider films are delightfully unusual and a bit chaotic, capturing a specific moment in film history. It’s unlikely Marvel will ever release another adaptation quite as original or strange, which is a shame.

With Nicolas Cage set to reprise a comic book role in the upcoming Spider-Noir series on Amazon, it’s a great time to revisit his past work in the genre. All of Nicolas Cage’s films are worth seeing, but his Ghost Rider movies are especially fun to watch again and again.
The Ghost Rider movies haven’t always been critically acclaimed, but they’ve gained a dedicated following over time. For fans feeling overwhelmed by the sprawling, interconnected nature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these two films offer a uniquely strange and enjoyable alternative.
