‘Oh, This Is Not The Same At All.’ Simu Liu On The First Change He Noticed Stepping On The Avengers: Doomsday Set

Marvel Studios is filming its newest superhero team-up movie, Avengers: Doomsday, where Earth’s heroes will battle Doctor Doom. Details about the plot have been kept secret, but Simu Liu, who is returning as Shang-Chi, has revealed some insights into the making of the film. He recently shared one significant difference he experienced compared to filming his first Marvel movie.

Marvel movie sets often have a lot in common – large casts and crews, and plenty of blue and green screens. However, when Simu Liu discussed working on Doomsday in an interview with Empire State Building (shared on TikTok), he didn’t mention those typical details. Instead, he highlighted a unique change made specifically for his character.

It felt amazing! It turned out to be a completely new suit, and it fit me much differently than the one I expected. I arrived on set feeling confident, but when I saw the actual suit, I realized things were totally different.

Marvel fans are used to seeing heroes get updated costumes throughout the movie series. I’m really looking forward to seeing Shang-Chi’s new look when he returns! However, given how complicated these costumes can be to work with, it makes sense that Simu Liu initially found it challenging to get used to. It sounds like he still enjoyed the process, though.

It really highlights how things evolve, and it’s amazing to see yourself transformed like that. It’s a wonderful feeling, and I think the film will be a fantastic experience for everyone.

More on Simu Liu

It’s still amazing to me that actors who are relatively new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Simu Liu, are getting the chance to talk about filming an Avengers movie.

As a huge movie fan, I loved hearing Simu Liu talk about his experience on the latest Avengers film – directed by the Russo brothers, of course! He’s been really open about how much he admired the other actors, especially the X-Men legends like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. But the story about meeting Robert Downey Jr. – Doctor Doom himself! – was hilarious. Apparently, Simu was so starstruck he was totally mortified and didn’t know what to say! It’s so relatable, honestly.

Despite a few awkward moments, Simu Liu seems to have really enjoyed working on the new superhero film, and fans have been eager to see him back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s hard to believe it’s been over four years since his debut in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduced his martial arts skills to the MCU. He’s clearly been hoping for another chance to reprise the role, and he continues to answer questions about a potential Shang-Chi sequel, which is still reportedly being developed.

Disney+ lets you stream Marvel movies and shows, with plans starting at $11.99 per month for a version that includes ads. You can watch without ads for $18.99 a month, or save 16% by paying $189.99 for a full year. See the deal here.

I’m really looking forward to seeing Simu Liu reprise his role in Avengers: Doomsday and checking out his new costume. You can see Shang-Chi back in action when the movie hits theaters on December 18th as part of the 2026 film lineup. Until then, you can rewatch his first appearance and other animated versions by subscribing to Disney+.
