Viggo Mortensen’s Appaloosa Is Now Streaming for Free

Viggo Mortensen’s excellent but often overlooked Western from the early 2000s is now available on a streaming service. While he’s famous for his role in a popular fantasy series, Mortensen also appeared in several other films, including this one that didn’t get the attention it deserved.

Good news for fans of the 2008 movie Appaloosa, featuring Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris – you can now watch it for free! It’s available to stream on Tubi.

Harris directed and co-wrote the screenplay for Appaloosa with Robert Knott, adapting it from Robert B. Parker’s 2005 novel of the same name. The film follows a lawman and his deputy as they try to bring peace back to the town of Appaloosa, which is being terrorized by the dangerous Randall Bragg, portrayed by Jeremy Irons.

In addition to Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen, the movie Appaloosa stars Renée Zellweger as Allie French, a recently widowed woman, along with Lance Henriksen and Adam Nelson as fellow gunslingers, Ring and Mackie Shelton. Rex Linn plays Sheriff Clyde Stringer, and the film also includes appearances by Ariadna Gil, Timothy Spall, Timothy V. Murphy, Boyd Kestner, Tom Bower, and James Gammon.

When Appaloosa came out in 2008, critics generally liked it, giving it a “Certified Fresh” rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 160 reviews. However, audiences weren’t as impressed, giving the film a score of just 55% on the site’s user-based rating system.

The show’s low ratings mirrored its disappointing performance in cinemas. Appaloosa only earned $27.7 million at the box office, despite costing $20 million to make. However, the film has remained popular with fans of westerns and those who enjoy its talented cast.

What’s Next for the Stars of Appaloosa?

While Viggo Mortensen and Renée Zellweger don’t have any new movies coming out soon, Ed Harris fans have two films to anticipate. In February, Harris will appear in a movie playing the character Whitelaw Redfellow. The film also stars Glen Powell as Becket Redfellow, a working-class man who was rejected by his rich family and sets out to get what he deserves.

Harris joins Jake Johnson, Ben Stiller, Mary Steenburgen, Chloe Fineman, Patton Oswalt, and many others in a new film. The movie centers around an older tennis player who surprisingly starts playing pickleball in an attempt to rescue a local sports club.

As a big fan of comedies, I was excited to hear that Apple picked up The Dink back in August! It’s another sports comedy for them, and they’ve been really getting into those lately. The film, directed by Josh Greenbaum and written by Sean Clements, actually finished shooting way back in March, so we’re looking at a 2026 release – which feels like a bit of a wait, but hopefully it’ll be worth it!

Appaloosa is currently available for streaming completely for free on Tubi.
