The popular Knives Out series is growing with its third film, Wake Up Dead Man. But a new mystery comedy series on Hulu is already receiving even higher praise than all the Knives Out movies combined. Rian Johnson’s 2019 mystery film, Knives Out, was a critical hit, with Daniel Craig’s portrayal of Benoit Blanc being particularly celebrated.
After the success of Knives Out, Glass Onion brought back detective Benoit Blanc in 2022 to solve another mystery with a new cast. The third film in the series, Wake Up Dead Man, is now streaming on Netflix and has quickly become one of the platform’s most popular titles.
If you liked Wake Up Dead Man, you’ll love Hulu’s new show – many think it’s even better than the Knives Out films.
Only Murders In The Building Has All The Elements Of A Knives Out Movie
You can watch the hit mystery comedy-drama, Only Murders in the Building, on Hulu. Created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, the show centers around three neighbors – Charles (played by Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver (Martin Short) – who all live in a fancy apartment building called the Arconia in Manhattan.
United by their love of true-crime podcasts, the three characters become friends. When a mysterious murder occurs in their building, they decide to investigate together, and ultimately uncover the killer. They then start their own successful true-crime podcast, using each season to explore and solve a different case.
If you enjoyed the Knives Out movies, you’ll likely love Only Murders in the Building. Both shows center around a murder mystery, and they both skillfully use supporting characters to create suspense and throw viewers off the scent of the real killer.
Both series feature comedic elements, but Knives Out leans towards dark humor. In Knives Out, the detective Blanc assists amateur investigators, whereas Only Murders in the Building follows a group of characters who are all amateur sleuths themselves.
Why Only Murders In The Building Is Better Than All Knives Out Movies

Both Knives Out and Only Murders in the Building are fantastic and fun to watch, but I personally think Only Murders is the stronger series. I love seeing Benoit Blanc investigate mysteries with his unique style, but I’m more invested in the characters of Charles, Mabel, and Oliver, and learning about their lives both together and separately. We still don’t know much about Blanc as a person, which makes it harder to connect with him.

Compared to the Knives Out films, Only Murders in the Building really shines because its TV series format lets it build suspense more effectively. It gives viewers time to piece together clues and allows for richer stories and more developed characters. If you enjoy crime and mystery shows—and especially if you liked Knives Out—Only Murders in the Building is definitely worth watching.
