Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 5 of Heated Rivalry, titled “I’ll Believe In Anything,” and for Rachel Reid’s novel, The Long Game. Despite the fast-paced action in Heated Rivalry episode 5, the show introduces a storyline that even the original author didn’t explore. The Crave Original series, created by Jacob Tierney and adapted from the novel, quickly gained popularity after becoming available on HBO Max. While Heated Rivalry largely follows the book, it still manages to keep both fans of the novel and new viewers engaged.
Despite being only six episodes long, Heated Rivalry does a great job of covering all the important storylines from Reid’s book. The episodes are well-structured, making it easy to follow the ten-year relationship between Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. The show also finds time to explore the connection between Scott Hunter and Kip Grady. Even more remarkably, it hints at a compelling future plot that isn’t fully developed in the books themselves.
Heated Rivalry Episode 5 Shows What Shane & Ilya Are Like As Teammates
In the fifth episode of Heated Rivalry, titled “All Star Weekend,” Shane and Ilya get the chance to play on the same team for the first time. They’ve been competitors since they started their careers, and the tension really grew when they were drafted by opposing teams in the same division – the Montreal Metros and the Boston Raiders. This event, held in Tampa Bay, finally lets them team up.
Shane stayed in the middle, and Ilya moved to the side, despite his initial reluctance. They quickly proved to be a powerful duo, and they seemed to genuinely enjoy playing together. It’s impressive to see them collaborating so well, even with their competitive spirit. This lighthearted scene offers a welcome break from the episode’s more serious moments and provides a nice contrast to the challenges Ilya will soon face.

Now that season 2 of Heated Rivalry is confirmed, the show will likely be based on The Long Game, the second book in the series. This sequel explores Ilya and Shane’s relationship in more depth, presenting a more complex and emotional story than the first book. The Long Game focuses on whether Shane and Ilya can truly commit to each other, with a major storyline involving them potentially playing on the same hockey team in Ottawa.
In The Long Game, Reid concludes the story as Shane relocates from Montreal to Ottawa to play with Ilya, finishing with their first professional game together. A short scene in Heated Rivalry gives readers a glimpse of what life looks like for Ilya and Shane after the events of the Game Changers series.

It’s currently unclear if “Heated Rivalry” will surpass the original story by Reid. However, if it remains popular, it could very well become more extensive than the source material – unless Reid is already planning another book to continue the story.
