Get ready to celebrate! Star Wars has just finished its seventh film since Disney took over the franchise. It’s been almost ten years since Disney’s first Star Wars movie was released, following their purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012. They’ve put out five films so far, and more are planned for the future.
The newest Star Wars movie, Starfighter, has finished filming, marking a significant step towards its release. Director Shawn Levy announced the completion of filming, making Starfighter the seventh Star Wars film from Disney to reach this stage.
Levy announced on Instagram that filming has finished, sharing a photo of himself on set. He wrote, “That’s a wrap! Moving into post-production for Starfighter…”
Since the film is scheduled for release in May 2027, director Levy and his team have a little over 17 months to finish editing and other post-production work.
Every Star Wars Movie of the Disney Era to Date
The Force Awakens

Released in December 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens successfully launched Disney’s new direction for the franchise. As the first live-action Star Wars film in ten years, it began a fresh story in the beloved galaxy, centering around Rey, a young scavenger unexpectedly caught up in a massive galactic conflict.
J.J. Abrams directed The Force Awakens, which stars Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and John Boyega. The film successfully combined familiar elements of Star Wars with new characters and a fresh story, bringing together classic heroes like Han Solo and Princess Leia with the next generation of stars.
Rogue One

Following the success of The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story offered a different kind of Star Wars experience. It was the first in a series of standalone films, and focused more on the gritty realities of war than previous installments. The movie tells the compelling and ultimately heartbreaking story of the Rebel spies who risked everything to steal the plans for the Death Star, setting the stage for the events of A New Hope.
When Rogue One came out, critics loved it, and many Star Wars fans now consider it the best movie in the entire series. Its success also led to the creation of Andor, a popular TV show that aired for two seasons on Disney+.
The Last Jedi

People have very strong opinions about Star Wars: The Last Jedi – you either love it or you don’t. It’s become one of the most controversial installments in the entire Star Wars saga, with director Rian Johnson’s sequel to The Force Awakens making decisions that really divided fans.
The film follows the ongoing conflict between the Resistance and the First Order, and Rey’s journey to learn the ways of the Jedi from the reclusive Luke Skywalker. It took some risks with its storytelling, like unexpectedly killing off key villains and presenting familiar characters in new ways. Even years after its release, The Last Jedi continues to spark debate among Star Wars fans.
Solo

Following Rogue One, Solo was the second film in the Star Wars Story series and premiered in May 2018. Directed by Ron Howard, the movie tells the story of how Han Solo (played by Alden Ehrenreich) became the famous scoundrel we all know and love.
Following a rocky start in development, including changes to the director during early stages, Solo: A Star Wars Story received mixed reviews and ultimately became the final film in the Star Wars Story anthology series.
The Rise of Skywalker

Following the controversial reception of The Last Jedi and the disappointing performance of Solo, The Rise of Skywalker faced high expectations as the final chapter in the Skywalker Saga. Directed again by J.J. Abrams, who also helmed The Force Awakens, the film attempted to satisfy all fans, but ultimately left many feeling unsatisfied because it didn’t fully commit to a clear vision.
The latest Star Wars film continued Rey’s story, with Daisy Ridley reprising her role, and featured a final showdown between her character and Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver. The return of the Emperor as a villain also loomed large over the galaxy. The film, The Rise of Skywalker, and other circumstances led Lucasfilm to reconsider its plans for future Star Wars movies.
The Mandalorian and Grogu

Star Wars is returning to the big screen in 2026 with a new movie called The Mandalorian and Grogu. Continuing the story from the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian, the film follows Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal) and Grogu as they embark on another exciting journey across the galaxy.
The new film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, kicks off an exciting next chapter for Star Wars. Starring Pedro Pascal, alongside Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White, this highly anticipated movie arrives in theaters on May 22, 2026.
Star Wars: Starfighter

Finally, the seventh and last planned Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Starfighter, is coming soon. Directed by Shawn Levy, who also made Deadpool & Wolverine, the film is scheduled for release on May 28, 2027, and will be the first story set after the events of the most recent trilogy.
Details about the plot of Starfighter are currently being kept secret. However, we know Ryan Gosling will star as the main character, who is expected to be responsible for safely transporting a young child who may be connected to the Jedi.
