Heated Rivalry Episode 5’s Coming Out Scene Addressed By Star

Be warned, spoilers ahead for episode 5 of “Heated Rivalry”! François Arnaud, who plays Scott, has discussed the show’s surprising coming out scene. In the episode, Scott shares a public kiss with Kip after their hockey team, the New York Admirals, wins a major championship – a victory they haven’t seen in decades. This moment marks Scott as the first openly gay player in the MLH.

In an interview with Vulture, Arnaud spoke about Scott’s kiss with Kip in episode 5 of Heated Rivalry. He explained how this moment reveals Scott’s character and what it signifies for their relationship. The actor shared that Scott has been hiding his true self due to loneliness and built emotional walls, but he finally allowed himself to be vulnerable and break those walls during a major team victory.

This is a defining moment for him. While his teammates celebrate with loved ones, he’s overcome with a sense of isolation. He’s incredibly energized by the victory, but also completely drained. He desperately needs a moment to catch his breath and process everything that’s happening so quickly. He faces a deep fear, but pushes through it, realizing that life feels meaningless without someone to share these experiences with.

He’s a very private person, and hockey dominates his life. Keeping a secret for so long has caused him to withdraw from others. He’s terrified of anyone finding out, so he intentionally keeps his close circle small. He shares a strong bond with his teammate, Carter, and we discussed with Kolton Stewart, who played Carter, whether he ever suspected anything about Scott’s personal life. Scott doesn’t grow a beard, and he’s carefully cultivated a public image as an ideal athlete. As team captain, he feels responsible not only for his own reputation but also for the image of the sport itself, and that influenced how we portrayed his hockey scenes in the show.

When Scott kisses Kip in public, it directly impacts the central love story of Heated Rivalry – the one between Shane Hollander, captain of the Montreal Metros (played by Hudson Williams), and Ilya Rozanov, captain of the Boston Raiders (played by Connor Storrie). The kiss happens while Shane and Ilya are watching the final game for the Prospect Cup, and it leads them to call each other.

Scott reveals he’s gay while Ilya and Shane are going through a rough patch in their relationship. They’ve been casually hooking up, but are now realizing their connection could be something deeper, and both are grappling with what that means and the risks involved. This news leads them to decide to meet up at Shane’s cabin.

Scott’s public kiss with Kip feels like a turning point for his character. Throughout the series, especially in episode 3, we see he’s a deeply lonely man who hides his vulnerability behind a confident exterior. As Arnaud points out, this fear of being open was a major reason he hadn’t come out previously.

After his hockey team achieved a record-breaking victory, he made the historic decision to come out publicly.
