Netflix has renewed its hit action thriller, Last Samurai Standing, for a second season. The series, which currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, premiered in mid-November and is set in 1878 Japan. It follows 292 defeated samurai who compete in a deadly survival game for a massive prize of 100 billion yen.
Competing for a prize worth around $656 million, Netflix’s new Japanese series features a talented cast including Junichi Okada, Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Masahiro Higashide, Shota Sometani, Taichi Saotome, Yuya Endo, Takayuki Yamada, Riho Yoshioka, Kazunari Ninomiya, Hiroshi Tamaki, and Hideaki Ito. In addition to acting, Junichi Okada, who used to be in a boyband, also choreographed the show’s impressive fight sequences and worked as a producer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has renewed the action thriller Last Samurai Standing for a second season. The show quickly became a hit, reaching the top of streaming charts and marking a significant achievement for a Japanese-produced series. It’s based on the novel of the same name by Shogo Imamura.
This series, set during Japan’s Meiji period, quickly became a global hit on Netflix, reaching number one in the Non-English series chart. It landed in the Top 10 in an impressive 88 countries and has remained a top show in Japan for five weeks. Notably, it’s the first Japanese production to be nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award in the Best Foreign Language Series category. The awards ceremony will be broadcast live on E! and USA Network on January 4th.
Okay, so I’ve been hearing a lot about Last Samurai Standing, and it’s definitely living up to the hype! It’s being called one of the best martial arts shows out there, and the numbers back it up – a perfect 100% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes based on 12 reviews! Even regular viewers love it, giving it an 85% rating. What everyone seems to be talking about is how amazing the fight scenes are, and how compelling the story is – it’s about a guy who enters a competition to help his sick wife and kid, which just adds to the drama. Seriously, if you’re into action and a good story, check this one out!
The idea of people competing in deadly games is a popular one, seen recently in shows like The Running Man remake and Squid Game. However, as Lewis Glazebrook points out in his review for ScreenRant, the Japanese series stands out with its stunning action sequences and isn’t weighed down by its familiar character types. In fact, the show’s approach to characters may even become richer now that it’s been renewed for another season – a welcome surprise for those who already enjoyed this hidden gem.
