I’m so excited! NIS America just released demos for The Legend of Heroes: Trails into the Horizon on consoles and PC today, so I can finally get a feel for the game!
You can download the story demo for Trails beyond the Horizon on all gaming platforms. However, the battle demo is currently exclusive to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. While there isn’t a dedicated demo for the new Switch 2 console yet, owners of the original Switch can play the older demo. I’ll update this article if a Switch 2 demo becomes available. Keep in mind that only progress made in the story demo can be carried over to the full game when it releases next month.
You can get the Story Demo on Steam, PlayStation 4 & 5. For the Nintendo Switch (eShop), please search for the game directly, as the web page isn’t available yet. The Battle Demo is available for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon will be available on January 15, 2026, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.

Good news! You won’t have to wait until January 15, 2026 to play The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon!
You can now play two demos! The Story Demo lets you experience the beginning of the game. Plus, you can carry your progress over to the full game when it launches next month. Just note that Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 players will need to download a Day One patch.
After you finish the initial story with Van and his companions, switch to the Battle Demo (available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5) to experience a later part of the game and test out the improved combat system.

I got to try out the free demo for Trails beyond the Horizon, and it’s seriously cool! It mixes real-time action with turn-based battles, which is a really fresh take. I played through three levels of this dungeon called Grim Garten, and you get to control three different teams – Van’s crew, Rean’s team, and even Kevin’s! It’s a great way to get a feel for the combat system.
