Tom Cruise Is Trying to Dig Up a Competitive Oscar

Although Disney+ scrapped its planned reboot of Holes, Tom Cruise has a new movie coming out called Digger that’s aiming for Oscar attention. The film is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, known for Birdman and for directing Leonardo DiCaprio to an Oscar win with The Revenant. Now, the question is whether Iñárritu can repeat that success with Tom Cruise.

I was so excited to see the first glimpse of Tom Cruise’s new movie! The teaser showed him looking… different, almost like he had prosthetics, posing with a shovel and wearing cowboy boots. The text then revealed his character’s name: Digger. It all played out with a cool Gorillaz song in the background. The movie’s being billed as a huge comedy, and honestly, the cast is incredible! Not only is Tom Cruise starring as Digger Rockwell, but they’ve also got Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, and Riz Ahmed – all amazing actors who’ve been nominated for Oscars before. And the supporting cast? Seriously impressive – Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, and even the legendary John Goodman! I can’t wait to see what this is all about.

Tom Cruise technically already has an Oscar – he received an honorary one in 2025. If he wins a standard, competitive Oscar now, he’d be following in the footsteps of Paul Newman, who won a competitive Oscar a year after receiving a lifetime achievement award. Cruise hasn’t been nominated for an acting Oscar since the 1990s, when he received nominations for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia. Since then, he’s mostly appeared in big-budget action movies, which the Academy Awards often overlooks. Now, with his new movie premiering on October 2, 2026, everyone is wondering if Cruise still has what it takes to win a competitive Oscar.
