A major memory chip maker predicts that the current shortage of RAM and storage will likely last for a long time – well into next year and beyond – because demand from the growing artificial intelligence industry keeps increasing.
During a recent earnings call, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra explained that the current gap between the supply of memory chips and the demand for them is expected to last for several years, not just a few months.
According to Mehrotra, continued high demand and limited supply are creating a challenging market environment, and this situation is expected to last at least through the end of 2026.
AI demand continues to outpace memory supply
Mehrotra notes that the rapid expansion of AI data centers is significantly increasing the predicted need for memory, and manufacturers are struggling to meet this demand.
Recently, we’ve seen a big jump in predicted demand for memory and storage because our customers are rapidly building out data centers for artificial intelligence. We expect that overall industry supply won’t be able to meet this demand for quite some time.

He reiterated that the pressure spans both major memory categories.
According to Mehrotra, the combination of strong demand and limited supply is creating challenges in the DRAM and NAND industries, and these conditions are likely to continue at least through 2026.
We’re sorry, but we haven’t been able to keep up with customer demand in all areas, even with our best efforts.
Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix—the world’s biggest memory chip makers—all agree that supply issues will likely persist. They point to the lengthy process of building new factories and worries about having too many chips available. Samsung has made it clear they prioritize consistent profits over rapidly increasing production.
As a tech enthusiast, it’s becoming super clear that memory chips – DRAM and NAND specifically – are a huge bottleneck right now. Micron is basically saying that companies are going to have to change what they’re making to match how much memory is actually available. It really highlights just how important these chips are to everything tech these days!
