The trailer for Dreams shows Jessica Chastain playing Jennifer, a wealthy and influential woman caught in a risky affair. She’s involved with Fernando (Isaac Hernández), a talented young ballet dancer from Mexico whom she’s supporting through her charitable foundation.
The romance in the steamy drama takes a turn when Fernando illegally enters the United States, and Jennifer is forced to do whatever it takes to keep him safe and preserve their relationship.
Greenwich Entertainment has just released a trailer for a new film showing Jennifer and Fernando falling in love. Their happiness is threatened when others start to notice their relationship and become suspicious.
Fernando eventually leaves, and though Jennifer begs him to stay, he explains he can’t live in hiding anymore and needs to be himself, even if it means they can’t be together. Jennifer doesn’t give up and tracks him down, eventually meeting his parents, who dislike her. The situation becomes increasingly intense, culminating in shocking scenes, including someone screaming while on fire in a jail cell – see the trailer for yourself below.
I just saw Dreams premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival this year, and it’s already getting buzz – it was nominated for the Golden Bear! It’s directed by Michael Franco, who I really liked his previous film Memory with Jessica Chastain. That one was a solid movie too, and critics seem to agree – it’s got an 85% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
After premiering in Berlin, the film Dreams has received a 70% approval rating from critics, based on 27 reviews. Reviewers particularly praised the acting by Chastain and Hernández. The film is also being recognized for tackling significant topics, such as the advantages enjoyed by the very wealthy and the challenges faced by immigrants due to unfair systems.
However, some critics feel the film doesn’t fully explore these issues with enough depth. Several reviews also point out a divisive plot point near the end and how it impacts the movie as a whole.
Alongside Jessica Chastain, Rupert Friend plays Jennifer’s brother Jake, Marshall Bell is their father Michael, Mercedes Hernández plays Fernando’s mother, and Eligio Meléndez plays Fernando’s father in the film.
I’ve always admired Jessica Chastain’s range. After she blew us all away in huge films like Interstellar, The Martian, and IT Chapter Two, it’s really interesting to see her consistently choose these smaller, more personal dramas. Dreams marks her second time working with Franco, and it feels like she’s deliberately seeking out these intimate roles now, which I really appreciate.
Dreams releases in theaters on February 27.
