The Maria Bamford Questionnaire is a fun set of 25 questions created by the popular comedian to reveal unexpected things about people. This time, we’re learning about Niecy Nash, an Emmy-winning actress famous for her role as Raineesha Williams on Reno 911! (since 2003) and her frequent appearances in shows created by Ryan Murphy, including Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Grotesquerie, and All’s Fair. She currently stars as Emerald Greene in All’s Fair, which has been renewed for another season on Hulu.
1.
What do you like to eat and/or drink right before bed?
I generally avoid eating or drinking anything right before bed. But if I had to pick something, and it’s a bit of a reach, I’d go with water or a margarita—maybe even both! Definitely not food, though.
2.
What would your religion be like if you could make up your own?
If I had to sum up my faith, it would be one word: love. That’s really what everything comes down to. I believe we were made to love, but it’s also where we often face our biggest challenges. So, for me, faith is about learning to love more fully – showing others how to love better, appreciating love when it’s present, and recognizing it when it appears in our lives.
3.
If you had to be the face of a product, what would you choose?
I’m definitely working on a project for myself first – shapewear, actually. I’ve noticed curvy women face unique challenges with undergarments, and I want to create something that solves those problems while still looking really good, even if you happen to be partially dressed!
4.
What’s your most repetitive, long-term fear?
Honestly, I’m not a particularly fearful person, but if I had to name one thing that genuinely gets to me, it’s what happens after we die. It’s just the sheer uncertainty of it all that I find a little unsettling. As a film buff, I’ve seen countless stories explore that transition, but none of them really answer anything, you know?
5.
What just happened in your life?
I’m still reeling from the amazing news – All’s Fair is officially getting a second season, and we haven’t even finished airing the first! I was absolutely thrilled. It’s wild that we’ve been number one in so many countries since we premiered, especially considering some critics weren’t exactly kind. But the fans have spoken, and that’s all that matters! They’ve made their feelings clear, so I don’t need to waste time responding to negativity. I just need to show up for season two and look fabulous!
6.
What is the last thing you read — labels, Us Weekly, and texts count. Can you give us the gist of what you learned?
I just finished reading a script this morning that I’m hoping to produce. I’m drawn to fresh, original stories and voices. If a script really grabs me – to the point where I immediately want to read it aloud – that’s when I know it’s something special.
7.
What is the last thing you bought used?
I found a pair of Christian Dior slides that I couldn’t find in stores, so I bought them from someone online who hadn’t worn them much – they might even still be in the original box! But they’ve just been sitting on a shelf ever since. I don’t even wear them, and I’m not even sure why I wanted them in the first place. I actually bought them because I broke my ankle and needed comfortable shoes to wear afterward. But I loved the old shoes so much that I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of them. So a lot of the shoes you see are just for display – I like looking at them!
8.
Who was the most difficult person to listen to (for you) recently?
I had a driver who was really unpleasant to listen to – he was rude, abrupt, and didn’t bother with pleasantries. I didn’t want to dwell on it, but I definitely remember him being very snappy. I actually thought to myself, “Hey, calm down! Just drive, that’s all we need right now.”
9.
What place will you never return to?
Fiji isn’t a place I plan to revisit. I didn’t feel welcome there as an LGBTQ+ person, and generally didn’t have a positive experience due to the local culture and attitudes.
10.
If you were without home or ability to earn, do you have anyone you can turn to for shelter and financial support? For how long?
Absolutely, I do! People like Ava DuVernay and Sherri Shepherd – I’d happily support them and be there for them however long it takes. They’ve earned my unwavering support.
11.
What TV show or movie would you want to play a part in, and what part would it be?
I really enjoy the show The Bear. It would be amazing to be on it – maybe as a new love interest for one of the characters, or as the owner of a competing, family-run restaurant that specializes in biscuits and opens right next door.
12.
What’s something you’d like to quit — a substance, a habit, etc. — and how would you go about it?
I keep putting off exercise and need to stop procrastinating. I often plan workouts in my head, but I want to actually do them. I just haven’t figured out a good plan yet, which is why it hasn’t happened. Honestly, it feels easier to just focus on eating better instead.
13.
If you could take a brain ride in anyone’s consciousness, whose would it be?
I consider Oprah a friend, and I’m incredibly impressed by the wisdom she’s gained from the brilliant people she’s learned from. She’s had fantastic mentors, so rather than seeking advice from many different sources, I’d go straight to her – she’s like a one-stop source for all that collective knowledge.
14.
What is something you regret doing within the past week?
I’m struggling to recall anything specific I did this week, so I might need to think back a few weeks. I had a really frustrating experience at a hotel and ended up speaking to the manager more sharply than I intended. I tried to apologize in person, but he wasn’t available. I asked someone else to pass on my apology, and I definitely regret how I handled the situation.
15.
What are you jealous of in a family member?
I generally don’t get jealous, but if I do, it’s of my family members who can sing. Seriously, if I had that kind of talent – being able to sing, dance, and act – I’d be unstoppable! I think someone upstairs realized that and decided to hold back on that particular gift. I’d probably sing constantly – even just ordering coffee! I’d offer to sing at every event, from baby showers to bar mitzvahs. I can sing okay, but it’s not the same as the incredible talent my family has. There’s singing, and then there’s really singing – what we call ‘sang’ in my community, and it’s a whole different level.
16.
How many colors has your hair been?
Probably five.
17.
If you had to move anywhere outside the U.S., where would you go?
I’ve been spending a lot of time in Mexico lately, mainly because it’s so easily accessible from Los Angeles. Puerto Vallarta is my favorite spot, so I’d likely go there.
18.
What’s the best thing you’ve ever learned from someone you don’t like?
I’ve been thinking about people I don’t get along with, and I’ve realized it’s perfectly fine if they don’t like me – and even more okay if I don’t like them either. It seems like a lot of people feel they need everyone around them to approve of them, but that’s just not realistic. It’s okay when it doesn’t happen.
19.
What did you have for breakfast this morning, and is it your usual?
I usually skip breakfast – I’m not really a breakfast person. But if I did eat it, I’d prefer something savory, like a spicy omelet or just bacon, eggs, and avocado.
20.
Describe something that was funny to you.
It’s difficult to explain how much I enjoy humor, because I find everything funny. I genuinely laugh every day! People tell me I’m the last person you’d want to sit near at a funeral if you’re trying to be serious, because I can always find something to laugh about. Working with my friends on shows like Reno 911! is especially hilarious – they’re some of the funniest people I know. I’m professional enough to not ruin a scene while filming, but as soon as the director yells ‘Cut!’, we all just crack up!
21.
Describe something that is not funny to you.
Children starving, babies crying, and anyone who feels hopeless is not funny at all.
22.
Describe something that is beautiful to you.
I was just telling my wife how attractive I find her. Yesterday, I turned to her and blurted out how beautiful she is. She was surprised, asking what prompted that, and I just said I wanted her to know what I think!
23.
Describe something that is ugly to you.
It really bothers me when people deliberately try to be hurtful. I mean, what’s the point? I was so proud when my daughter won an award for being the kindest student. Everyone else was getting awards for academics, but hers was for kindness, and my mom and I were thrilled! We told all the other parents that kindness isn’t something they teach in school—she learned that from us at home. I just think intentionally being unkind is really unpleasant.
24.
How much money do you think is “enough” for the whole rest of your life — that you wouldn’t need to work again?
I don’t have enough saved to fully retire; I enjoy working too much. It’s not just about the money – I’m passionate about what I do.
25.
What do you think is your most likely cause of death?
I’m hoping to live a long life, maybe even to 100, and when my time comes, I just want to be able to peacefully fall asleep and not wake up. That’s all I’m wishing for.
