Last week at The Game Awards, Crystal Dynamics revealed Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a new take on the classic 1996 Tomb Raider game. They aim to be true to the spirit of the original, but plan to make it less punishingly difficult than the almost 30-year-old PlayStation 1 version.
During a recent press conference, as GamesRadar reported, Crystal Dynamics’ Will Kerslake discussed how they’re handling the difficulty of the original PlayStation 1 game. The 1996 release, like many games from that time, was notoriously challenging, with sections that were extremely difficult and included instant-death traps that were hard to avoid without already knowing where they were.
According to Kerslake, successfully updating a game involves adapting it to what modern players enjoy. While he didn’t say it directly, it’s likely ‘Legacy of Atlantis’ will reduce the number of instant-death moments. However, the game will still be challenging.
Puzzles, action-packed movement, and daring feats are central to what makes a Tomb Raider game, and those elements will definitely be in Legacy of Atlantis,” explained Kerslake. “Expect to see classic Tomb Raider features – like rolling boulder traps – and plenty of everything fans love about the series.
The new game, Legacy of Atlantis, is planned for release in 2026, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the original Tomb Raider on PlayStation 1. Instead of a strict remake, Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog are taking a fresh approach and essentially rebuilding the game from the ground up.
Alix Wilton Regan is taking over as the voice of Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider: Catalyst, marking her first time with the series. Camilla Luddington, who voiced Lara in the three recent Tomb Raider games, shared a warm goodbye to the character and offered her best wishes to Regan.
