The first trailer for the movie received a varied response from viewers. However, a recent test screening suggests the film itself might be much better, according to insider Daniel Richtman. He reports hearing positive feedback from multiple people who attended the Tuesday screening. Could this mean the movie will be a big success for DC Studios? There’s a catch, though – it’s still too early to tell for sure.
It’s important to remember that these reports are just rumors, but while one source, Richtman, said the movie was well-received, another insider, @Cryptic4KQual – who is usually accurate with trailer and runtime leaks – heard a much more negative reaction. They shared that:
I heard they did a test screening of Supergirl, and it ran about two hours and five minutes. From what I gathered, the feedback wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t bad exactly. Some parts really popped, while others didn’t quite land. Everyone’s saying Milly Alcock is fantastic as Supergirl, and there are two action sequences featuring Lobo. The only downside? The villain apparently isn’t very impressive.
It’s normal for early reactions to differ, and honestly, those initial opinions don’t really matter much in the long run. A great example is the movie Superman; it received mixed reactions at first, but went on to be a huge success and one of the highest-earning Superman films ever.
‘Supergirl’ Can Deliver a Summer Hit for DC Studios, but It Is Not Guaranteed
James Gunn and Peter Safran faced a real test with the first film in their new DC Universe plan, Superman. While the movie did fairly well, earning more at the box office than The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it didn’t quite live up to all the hype. Now, the question is: can Supergirl be the film that truly gets the DCU back on track?
Supergirl has only appeared in one major movie before, and it wasn’t a hit. The 1984 film, starring Helen Slater, earned just $14 million at the box office despite costing $35 million to make, and remains a relatively obscure entry in the DC film universe.
The new Supergirl movie in the DC Universe has a significantly larger budget, meaning it will need to earn at least as much money as the Superman film to be considered successful. Although James Gunn isn’t directing, the film is expected to feel different from Superman, with many comparing it to Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Whether this difference is positive remains to be seen next summer. However, given the success of Gunn’s Guardians films, which turned relatively unknown characters into popular ones, being compared to those movies is likely a good sign.
Expect to see more details about Supergirl in the early part of 2026.
