The latest Silent Hill game, Silent Hill f, broke with tradition by moving the setting from the familiar American town to Japan in the past. According to developer Motoi Okamoto, this new approach – setting future games outside of the iconic town and further back in time – could become a common feature of the Silent Hill franchise.
As a gamer, I found Okamoto’s comments really interesting. He was saying they’re thinking about how they can bring other cultures into the game, kind of like what they did with Japanese folklore. He mentioned they could explore shamanistic beliefs in Central and South America, which sounds awesome. But they’re not stopping there! They’re also considering Russia, Italy, and South Korea, because each of those places has its own unique myths and beliefs. He thinks diving into those areas will give them tons of new ideas and help them expand the game’s world in really cool ways.
Okamoto seems to have considered the Central and South American settings most deeply. He noted these regions have experienced many military governments and coups, which have fostered a sense of boldness and traditional masculinity. He also pointed to the influence of shamanism and local traditions as a key part of the culture.
Okamoto pointed out that it might be challenging for Konami to find a suitable development partner in Central or South America for a new Silent Hill game, as there aren’t many studios in that region. However, he didn’t dismiss the possibility entirely.
Recently, the creator of Silent Hill, Okamoto, said that fan-made content like memes and artwork helped keep the game popular even long after it came out. The game also received an update that included an easier difficulty setting and the ability to skip to later stages if you’ve already beaten it. It also seems like a remake of Silent Hill 2 is coming to Xbox Series X|S, although Microsoft and Konami haven’t officially announced a release date for that version yet.
