A 92-Year-Old Just Won A Tekken 8 Tournament

The Tekken fighting game series has been popular for thirty years, letting players battle as skilled characters. Recently, 92-year-old Hisako Sakai from Japan became a legend herself by winning a Tekken 8 tournament.

A recent Tekken 8 tournament for senior players was organized by Care, a Japanese eSports group dedicated to making eSports accessible to older adults. Care has been hosting these tournaments since 2019, and they run them like professional events, complete with live streams and commentators. You can watch a video of the tournament below, as reported by Automaton.

Sakai reached the final round playing as Claudio, where she faced Goro Sugiyama, a 74-year-old player who used Lili. You can watch their match starting at the 2 hour and 25 minute mark in the video linked above. Although Sugiyama was surprisingly quick for his age, Sakai seemed to have faster reflexes and a better understanding of the game, allowing her to secure a win.

Katsuhiro Harada, the head of Tekken development, has left Bandai Namco after working there for thirty years. While he’s not retiring from game development altogether, Harada mentioned in his goodbye message that he’s thinking about how to best spend the rest of his career as a creator.

Earlier this year, the creator of the Tekken fighting game series, Katsuhiro Harada, jokingly suggested adding the Waffle House restaurant chain as a feature in the game. Waffle House has gained some unwanted attention due to viral videos of fights happening in its restaurants, and it seems they weren’t interested in being associated with that image, so they declined Harada’s idea.
