Kit Harington Does Not Want to Return to ‘Game of Thrones’

George R.R. Martin has hinted at several new spin-off shows being developed. However, fans hoping for a sequel series focused on Jon Snow might be let down, as the actor who played him recently suggested he’s unlikely to return to the role, with a response as cold as the Night King himself.

Kit Harington is currently working on a fantasy project in a new way – he’s voicing the character Gilderoy Lockhart in the full-cast audiobook of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. In an interview with Variety, he was asked if he’d be interested in voicing Jon Snow if George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books were also made into audiobooks. Here’s what he said:

“No, god no. I don’t wanna go anywhere near it. I spent 10 years doing that. Thanks, I’m alright.”

It’s possible the actor doesn’t want to repeat his experience from Game of Thrones, and he might consider returning only if it’s a completely new story within that world. However, he doesn’t seem eager to rejoin the series at all right now.

In 2024, Kit Harington explained why the previously announced Jon Snow sequel series wasn’t moving forward, stating at the time:

So, here’s the deal: HBO actually approached me with the idea, and my gut reaction was to pass. But then I started thinking about the potential – there was this really compelling story about what happens to a soldier after the war, something I felt hadn’t been fully explored. I thought maybe there was still something worthwhile to say, but within a very focused scope. We spent about two years going back and forth, developing it, but ultimately, it just didn’t come together. It didn’t pan out, sadly.

Kit Harington has hinted he’d only consider reprising his role as Jon Snow if a truly compelling story were presented. He seems uninterested in revisiting the character otherwise, which suggests that fans hoping for the spinoffs to retroactively improve the ending of Game of Thrones may be disappointed. It appears a satisfying continuation of Jon Snow’s story is a long shot.

Kit Harington Has Moved on from ‘Game of Thrones’

HBO

Kit Harington is largely known for playing Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, and that role significantly impacted his career. Since then, he’s been taking on a wider variety of film and television projects, moving beyond the fantasy world of dragons and sword fights.

Kit Harington first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Eternals as Dane Whitman, with hints that he would eventually become the Black Knight and connect with Mahershala Ali’s Blade. But with no news on Blade and Eternals facing an uncertain future, it’s unclear what’s next for his character in the Marvel universe.

Recently, Harington has been in a few films, including the popular The Family Plan 2 with Mark Wahlberg, and the horror movie The Beast Within. He’s also got some projects coming up, like the romantic drama Eternal Return, and he’ll be returning as Henry Muck in the fourth season of HBO/BBC’s Industry.
