The Budget On Rocky Was So Dang Low, When They Messed Up The Poster Sylvester Stallone Had To Film A New Scene

You can tell a movie is made on a shoestring budget when it’s actually less expensive to reshoot a scene than to fix a mistake on promotional materials. This is what happened with Rocky, widely considered the greatest sports movie ever made. Sylvester Stallone, who wrote and starred in the film, explained they had to film an entirely new scene because the posters for the final fight were printed wrong. Surprisingly, this extra scene ended up improving the movie so much that it’s now difficult to imagine the film without it.

Red Trunks With A White Stripe Or White Trunks With A Red Stripe?

This is similar to those viral audio illusions, like the “Laurel” or “Yanni” debate, or a Mandela Effect situation. The question is about the boxing trunks Rocky Balboa wore during his fight with Apollo Creed: were they red with white stripes, or white with red stripes? While the movie clearly shows him wearing white trunks with red stripes, the banner advertising the fight depicts him in red trunks with a white stripe. It’s a visual inconsistency!

You can watch both the version with the error and the corrected version of the scene with a Peacock subscription.

As a film buff, I was excited to see what Peacock TV offers, and honestly, for $7.99 a month or $79.99 a year, it’s a pretty sweet deal. I’m a huge Rocky fan, and it’s great they have that, but they also have live fights and a bunch of other movies and shows. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for some entertainment!

Meanwhile, now you know that wasn’t intentional. The banner was supposed to match what Rocky would actually be wearing for the fight, but somewhere along the line, things must have gotten mixed up. When the posters arrived, the trunks were the wrong color. When life (and a tight budget) gives you lemons, well, figure out a cheap solution. As Stallone explained in an Instagram post, the solution was to film a quick scene explaining away the inconsistency.

The detail absolutely works, and actually enhances the movie in a clever way. Rocky is constantly underestimated, and no one – not fans, the champion, or the boxing media – takes him seriously. So, the banner maker’s mistake with the colors is a perfect fit, adding another layer to the disrespect Rocky faces.

Beyond the inspiring training sequence, there’s a great scene where Rocky gets a harsh dose of reality. Right after his motivational montage, the fight promoter, Mr. Jergens, bluntly tells him that nobody believes he has a chance of winning.

It doesn’t really matter, does it? I’m sure you’re going to give us a great show.

The scene perfectly captures the heart of the movie Rocky. We feel every bit of Rocky’s journey as he leaves the arena and goes back to his humble apartment – hopeful for what’s next, but also questioning if he truly belongs.
