Peter Parker, Spider-Man, stands out among Marvel heroes because he’s consistently refused to kill, even when other heroes sometimes resort to lethal force. He’s always managed to uphold this principle – until now. A recent storyline breaks that long-held rule in a shocking twist: Peter Parker ends the life of his own Aunt May.
The miniseries Radioactive Spider-Man, created by writer Joe Kelly and artist Kev Walker, explores the story of Peter Parker in an alternate timeline known as the Age of Revelation. Despite the devastating X-Virus wiping out much of the population and causing mutations, Peter’s life hasn’t changed drastically. He’s developed an extra set of arms and needs ongoing radiation treatment to stay alive, but he continues to bravely protect Manhattan and its remaining citizens.
For the past ten years, Peter has kept a big secret: his Aunt May was also changed by the X-Virus. Whenever she gets frightened or confused, she transforms into a monster that attacks people. Peter has been trying to find a cure while keeping her hidden and calm, but recently, she saw him as Spider-Man without his mask and flew into a rage, managing to escape.
Why did Peter Parker kill Aunt May?
Aunt May’s increasingly dangerous state in Manhattan forces Peter Parker to make a heartbreaking decision. As Spider-Man, he brings her back to the lab where she was originally exposed to radiation. There, he overloads the chamber with a fatal dose of radiation, enough to end her life as the monster she’s become.
Peter explained his actions by saying he knew Aunt May wouldn’t want to cause anyone’s death, and he believed ending her life was covered by the Do Not Resuscitate order in her will. Fortunately, Aunt May briefly regained consciousness to thank Peter for what he’d done, even though she understood how much it hurt him.
