Disney is reportedly making a live-action movie that retells a classic animated story, but this time from the villain’s perspective. This raises questions about how the film will change the original story. With nearly a century of history, Disney has a huge collection of well-known tales that they often update for today’s audiences.
It’s now very common to see Disney’s animated classics turned into live-action films, and many have come out recently. So, while another live-action Disney remake isn’t shocking, the choice of character for this new adaptation might be unexpected for some viewers.
New Reports State A Live-Action Gaston Movie Is In Early Development
Although plans for a movie starring Gaston, a character from the live-action Beauty and the Beast, were previously abandoned, Deadline reports that a new film focusing on him is now in the initial stages of development.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve noticed Disney’s been on a roll lately with these live-action remakes of their classic animated films. It’s clearly a winning strategy for them – just look at Lilo & Stitch last year, which pulled in a billion dollars at the box office! They’re definitely leaning into this trend, and it seems to be paying off big time.
Considering Disney released a live-action Beauty and the Beast in 2017, it’s not surprising many people didn’t expect a story about Gaston. With some time having passed, it seemed like Disney had already explored everything they wanted to with that part of the Beauty and the Beast universe.
A Live-Action Gaston Movie Would Continue Disney’s Villain Redemption Story Trend
While some might be surprised to hear a Gaston movie is in the works, it actually fits with Disney’s recent trend of reimagining classic villains. The studio has been giving these characters more sympathetic stories, often portraying them as antiheroes or even heroes, and it seems like Gaston’s movie will follow that same pattern.
Films like Cruella and the Maleficent movies really dive into the question of what makes a villain, presenting these characters as heroes and showing how they became that way. But Disney has a history of exploring this theme – looking at the roots of villainy and how people can be wrongly seen as the bad guy – which is also clear in popular films like Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph, and Encanto.
Although Gaston is presented as a villain in Beauty and the Beast, a live-action remake could portray him as a more sympathetic and understandable character. His actions in the original Disney film might seem less malicious if we consider he didn’t know the Beast’s true identity. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see how the new movie chooses to tell his story.
