MGM is developing a fresh adaptation of the classic Western, spearheaded by Tim Kring, the creator of Heroes and Touch. The series, consisting of eight episodes, will stream on MGM+ and production is scheduled to start in June 2026. Previously, True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto was working on a remake after his 2016 version of the film, but Amazon ultimately cancelled the project. Now, MGM+, which is owned by Amazon, is reviving the idea with a new approach.
Michael Wright, head of MGM+, praised Tim Kring as a skilled storyteller. He noted that Kring, along with Donald De Line, Larry Mirisch, and Bruce Kaufman, created a series that captures the spirit of traditional Westerns while staying true to the original film. The show also powerfully explores enduring themes of overcoming adversity through teamwork and the possibility of redemption for even flawed characters by aiding those in need.
The new series will follow a plot similar to the original movie: a team of mercenaries in the 1880s is hired to protect a village from a ruthless land baron and his enforcers. This extended version of the story will delve into the backgrounds of all seven mercenaries, revealing why they chose to defend a peaceful Quaker community, even if it means resorting to violence.
‘The Magnificent Seven‘ Has a Long Hollywood History

Sony Pictures Relelasing
Although this new TV show feels fresh for the franchise, a similar series actually aired on CBS between 1998 and 2000. Now, after 25 years, there’s a whole new generation of viewers who likely haven’t seen the original, and its availability on MGM+ should help it reach a much larger audience than before.
It’s no surprise that The Magnificent Seven has been made into a movie several times. The 1960 version directed by John Sturges is the most well-known and widely considered the best, building on the story originally told in Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. It’s a classic Western, earning high praise from both critics and audiences (89% and 87% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes) and features a stellar cast including Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn, and Horst Buchholz. While there were several follow-up films, the last one released was The Magnificent Seven Ride! in 1972.
Antoine Fuqua’s 2016 film boasted a strong cast including Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and others. It was particularly significant as the last movie to feature music from the late James Horner, who passed away before its completion; Simon Franglen finished the score. While reviews were mixed, the film proved financially successful, earning $162 million at the box office on a $90 million budget.
