Horror filmmaker Damian Mc McCarthy is following up his critically acclaimed 2024 film, Oddity, with a new movie called Hokum. He previously earned praise for his 2020 film, Caveat. While both Caveat and Oddity had limited releases, Hokum will be distributed by Neon, giving it a much wider audience. Starring Adam Scott – known for his work and recently acclaimed for the Apple TV+ series Severance – Hokum is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 1, 2026.
Neon describes the movie:
A horror novelist travels to an Irish inn to spread his parents’ ashes, but he doesn’t know the inn is rumored to be haunted by a witch.
Also starring in the movie are David Wilmot and Austin Amelio.

NEON
In just under ten years, Neon has become a remarkably innovative and daring film studio. Since their first release, Colossal in 2017, they’ve won two Academy Awards for Best Picture with Parasite and Anora. They’ve also gained significant attention in the horror genre with films like Longlegs, Cuckoo, Immaculate, and Possessor. Director Brandon Cronenberg’s films are known for their unusual concepts, which might not work for other filmmakers, but under his direction, become surprisingly terrifying.
The film Caveat follows a wanderer who takes a job babysitting a young girl in a secluded house. There’s a catch, though: he’s required to wear a chain that restricts him to certain areas. Adding to the unsettling premise, the man also suffers from amnesia, causing gaps in his memory. As a result, both supernatural and realistic terrors begin to emerge. Caveat premiered at several film festivals, but its release was limited by the COVID-19 pandemic and it eventually became available on the Shudder streaming service in 2021.
The film Oddity from last year told the story of a blind woman with psychic abilities who went to visit her deceased twin sister’s house. She was accompanied by a large, wooden figure—a golem—with a frightening face. Once they arrived, strange things started happening, often involving the golem seemingly moving on its own when no one was looking.
Although the basic idea behind Hokum seems simple, given that it’s from the creators of McCarthy and Neon, we suspect it will be surprisingly scary. The first teaser trailer only strengthens that feeling.
