The film 28 Years Later concludes with teenager Spike facing a group of skilled and unusual fighters called “the Jimmys.” Led by Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, played by O’Connell, these warriors are experts at defeating zombies, and they do so with flair. O’Connell has indicated that the next film will delve into Crystal’s backstory. There’s a suggestion that the character is loosely based on Jimmy Savile, a British personality who died in 2011 without facing legal consequences for his crimes. The actor portraying Crystal has acknowledged this connection to the controversial figure.

Nia DaCosta, the director of films like Candyman and The Marvels, recently clarified that she has no intention of examining the life or crimes of Jimmy Savile in her work. She explained that her character, Jimmy Crystal, represents a broader idea: someone who corrupts good things – like the beloved children’s show the Teletubbies – and turns them into something terrifying.
’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ Continues Danny Boyle’s Wildly Distinct Zombie Franchise
The new movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will be released in theaters on January 16, 2026. Fans in the U.K. will get a chance to see it a little earlier, on January 14. This is the fourth film in the 28 Days Later series, which began in 2002 with a film starring Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, and Brendan Gleeson. Though he didn’t direct the 2007 sequel, original director Danny Boyle returned to the franchise earlier this year with 28 Years Later, featuring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Alfie Williams.
The next installment in the 28 Years Later story features Spike Williams teaming up with Jimmy Crystal’s group to fight zombies. They soon cross paths with Dr. Ian Kelson, a mysterious character played by Ralph Fiennes. The trailer shows humanity battling hordes of zombies, but hints that even more dangerous threats exist in this post-apocalyptic world.
Though it seems soon to be talking about what’s next, The Bone Temple isn’t the last we’ll see of the series. Sony Pictures is already planning a third movie after positive reactions to early viewings. While the sequel doesn’t have a title yet, Alex Garland is likely to write the script, and Danny Boyle has indicated he wants to direct, having passed the director’s role to DaCosta for The Bone Temple.
