December 16th, 2025 is going to be a huge day for Kojima Productions! It’ll be 10 years since Hideo Kojima went independent from Konami and started his own studio. Not long after that, he partnered with Sony for his first exclusive game, and we got a first glimpse of the studio’s logo and that cool mascot – it really felt like a sneak peek at the unique world he was building with Death Stranding. It’s crazy to think how far things have come!
10 years of Ludens and counting
Ludens is the central symbol of Kojima Productions, acting as both its mascot and a core part of its creative philosophy. Visually, it’s the astronaut-like figure in the company’s logo, combining the look of a modern spacesuit with elements of medieval armor.
Ludens represents Hideo Kojima’s core philosophy for his studio, inspired by the idea of “Homo Ludens,” which translates to “Those who play.” This concept highlights the belief that play is fundamental to human creativity, culture, and how we evolve. Kojima sees games as more than just fun; he views them as a powerful way to explore complex ideas, feelings, and what connects us as people.
Recently, Kojima announced that Kojima Productions would be expanding beyond video games to celebrate its 10th anniversary. This includes releasing a high-end sake and a unique credit card created with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. The card offers a rewards program where you can earn points on purchases and redeem them for exclusive Kojima Productions merchandise.
If you’re visiting Japan, your card could be useful, particularly with new merchandise being released. Hideo Kojima recently announced a new Sam Bridges figure in “Tar Black,” and also unveiled a new design for Ludens.
Although the original Death Stranding won three awards at The Game Awards in 2019, its sequel, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, didn’t achieve the same success this year, with Expedition 33 winning most of the top prizes. It seems Hideo Kojima is now concentrating on new projects with his studio, Physint, and a game called OD. However, development of the OD project might be slowed down due to the recent passing of actor Udo Kier, who was part of the game.

So, Hideo Kojima isn’t just making games anymore – he’s creating something totally new that’s like a mix of gaming and movies, which is wild! And get this, a Death Stranding anime is coming out in 2027! Things are really looking up for Kojima Productions, and honestly, I’m hoping they keep delivering those amazing, one-of-a-kind experiences for years to come – another decade would be incredible.
