Anthony Geary, General Hospital Star, Dead at 78

Anthony Geary, best known for playing Luke Spencer on General Hospital, passed away in Amsterdam on December 14th at the age of 78, according to TV Insider. His death was due to complications following surgery. During his 28 years on the show, Geary won a record seven Daytime Emmy Awards for his leading role. His character, Luke, was a troubled criminal connected to the mafia, and his relationship with Laura Webber (Genie Francis) was famously controversial. An early storyline involved Luke sexually assaulting Laura, but despite this, the show depicted their eventual love. Francis has since expressed regret over this storyline. The pair became one of the show’s most popular couples, but Geary found it draining to constantly embody the expectations surrounding Luke. He described Luke to the Toronto Star (as reported by the New York Times) as a complex figure – violent, greedy, arrogant, and chauvinistic, but also romantic and sensitive – and a symbol of some of the negative aspects of the 1980s.

I was so heartbroken to hear about Tony Geary. I shared a few thoughts on X this morning, trying to capture just how incredible he was. Honestly, no one shone as brightly as Tony. He was truly one of a kind. As an actor, he was just so committed to honesty, even if it meant being a little rough around the edges – but he always made you laugh! He was the ultimate anti-hero, always challenging things, but even people who usually played it safe couldn’t help but smile. He completely ruined me for working with other leading men – no one will ever measure up. I’m absolutely crushed and going to miss him terribly, but I feel so lucky to have had the chance to work with him.
