Reddit is challenging a new Australian law in court. The law requires social media platforms to get parental consent for users under 16, and Reddit argues it limits free speech and could compromise user privacy.
A legal challenge has been filed against Australia’s new age restriction law, which began on December 10, 2025. The law requires popular platforms like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Twitch, Kick, and Facebook to prevent users under 16 from accessing their services, or they could face penalties of up to $49.5 million AUD.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a new law in 2024 intended to keep children safe online. Most social media platforms are following the rules, but Reddit is objecting and plans to handle the situation differently.
Reuters reports that Reddit has filed a legal challenge in the High Court of Australia, arguing that the law violates the right to freely express political opinions. The lawsuit names the Australian government and Communications Minister Anika Wells as the parties being sued.
Australia defends Reddit ban for younglings
So, Reddit’s lawyers – Perry Herzfeld and Jackson Wherrett – basically argued that if you banned anyone under 16, it would mess with important political conversations. They said a lot of young Aussies are already talking politics online, and cutting them off could really impact how they form their opinions as future voters. As a gamer, I see that – a lot of political stuff gets discussed in communities I’m part of, and it’s good to see younger people involved!
I just read something really interesting! It looks like Australia is seriously considering letting 16-year-olds vote soon – maybe even within months! The document I saw points out that these young voters will already be forming their political opinions through everything they see and hear before they even turn 18, so it makes sense to give them a voice.

Reddit also argued it shouldn’t have to follow the law, claiming it doesn’t qualify as a social media platform according to the law’s definition.
The Australian government doesn’t appear likely to change its position. A representative for Minister Wells stated the government supports Australian families and children, not social media companies, and will continue to protect young people from online harm.
Health Minister Mark Butler strongly criticized Reddit, claiming the company prioritized profits over the well-being of young users. He stated the government is prepared to fully contest Reddit’s lawsuit.
Websites and apps facing the ban are now using methods to guess users’ ages, like tracking their online activity or analyzing photos. Reddit has criticized these approaches, stating they could seriously compromise user privacy.
Reddit has filed a legal challenge to a new law, arguing it threatens the privacy and free speech of its users. In a public statement, the company explained it believes the law raises significant concerns for everyone online and needs to be reviewed.
This disagreement is happening as countries worldwide discuss how to limit what young people see online. The UK recently started requiring facial scans to verify ages for some content, but this caused concern about privacy and how easy it is to use. Denmark is also planning to block social media access for anyone under 15.
As a Reddit user, I’m really concerned about this lawsuit. It looks like we’re headed for a long fight in court, and honestly, it could change a lot about how the government controls what young people see and say online. It’s a big deal, and I’m worried about where it’s all going to end up.
