Like so many others, I absolutely love *Home Alone* – it’s a classic Christmas movie! The film showed us, through eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, that being home alone could actually be fun, with activities like jumping on the bed, watching silly movies, and playing pranks on grown-ups. But I was really surprised to hear Macaulay Culkin reveal a long-held rumor about the movie that I never expected.
The physical challenges in *Home Alone* looked incredibly painful – think flying paint cans, stepping on nails, and even a tarantula to the face! Joe Pesci actually suffered burns during the famous blowtorch scene. For years, people have said that one of Macaulay Culkin’s stunt doubles was a surprisingly short, 30-year-old man. Culkin recently confirmed this story on the show *First We Feast*, which wasn’t exactly a surprise to many.
I first met a guy named Larry in the costume department. I was changing, and when I walked out, there he was, wearing the exact same outfit as me – we were both trying it on! I said, ‘Hi Larry, how are you?’ and he replied, in a deep voice, ‘Good, I’m Larry, your stunt double.’ Then he looked at me and asked, ‘How old do you think I am?’ It was a bit of a trick question, because I knew he was much older – I was only nine. I guessed ‘thirteen,’ and he thought that was pretty funny.
Macaulay Culkin’s voice sounded much older than thirteen while playing the stuntman! But remember, he was only nine years old at the time, and to a nine-year-old, anyone older than a teenager seems really old.
I just found out something wild! Apparently, Macaulay Culkin had a stunt double who was about my age, but the same height as him when he was a kid. I always figured if he had a double, it would be another kid doing the dangerous stuff, not a full-grown adult! So, all those rumors were actually true. It’s so weird to think about seeing a grown man dressed up as little Kevin McCallister – I bet that was a strange sight for Macaulay on the set of *Uncle Buck*!
If you’re wondering where to spot Larry in the classic Christmas movie, look for the funny scene where Kevin sneaks into his brother’s room to grab some money. Kevin climbs onto furniture to reach the money on a high shelf, but ends up falling with it. The actor from *My Girl* has a great story about filming that scene – it’s a memorable moment all on its own!
I’ll never forget watching Larry on set. He was trying to grab something off a high shelf, and the whole thing just came crashing down! The first attempt was messy, really messy. They did another take, and another, but they weren’t happy with how everything fell. It just kept happening, take after take. I was honestly getting worried – the poor kid was only thirteen! I kept thinking, ‘Please be careful with Larry!’
It still cracks me up remembering Macaulay constantly yelling that the stuntman, Larry, was “only 13!” It’s wild to think he was actually 30. I do feel sorry for the guy though, having to take all those falls and get hit with bits of wood – it seemed like he was risking a serious head injury. At least Macaulay was considerate enough to look out for his stunt double’s safety.
It’s amazing what you discover about the movie *Home Alone*! Recently, it came out that Macaulay Culkin’s stunt double was a 30-year-old named Larry. It just goes to show that movie magic often comes from the dedication of unsung heroes – in this case, someone willing to take a lot of falls! You can see Larry’s work for yourself by streaming *Home Alone* on Disney+.
