It took Disney 15 years to make a third Tron movie. Unfortunately, the film, released in theaters in October 2025, wasn’t successful, and it’s not performing well on streaming services either.
Joachim Rønning’s film Tron: Ares didn’t perform well at the box office, earning only $142.2 million globally despite costing an estimated $180 to $220 million to make. Starring Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Jeff Bridges, the movie is also losing popularity on streaming, currently ranking 21st worldwide on Prime Video according to FlixPatrol.
The movie Tron: Ares became available digitally and on streaming services on December 2nd. It currently ranks as the 6th most downloaded movie in the U.S. Apple TV store and 7th worldwide. Despite this, the film wasn’t successful with audiences or critics, earning a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 250 reviews. This data is current as of October.
Just days after its release in October, the science fiction film was already considered a disappointment. According to reports, this third Tron movie might be the last one. However, insiders say the film’s failure wasn’t due to Jared Leto’s performance. Although Leto, who played the main character Ares, has faced considerable controversy and accusations of misconduct, his representatives have denied these claims.
Tron’s Failure Explained by Industry Experts
A prominent talent manager questioned why the studio would cast Jared Leto in Ares when actors like Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, and Benedict Cumberbatch are struggling to land leading roles. The manager implied Leto isn’t a reliable box office draw and has a questionable public image. Despite Leto being heavily featured in Ares‘s marketing, many Hollywood studios are now hesitant to cast him as a lead actor.
According to a source familiar with the industry who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, Jared Leto’s star power as a leading actor may be fading. However, the source emphasized that the disappointing box office performance of Ares wasn’t Leto’s fault alone. An agency partner stated that even a star like Ryan Gosling wouldn’t have saved the film, explaining that the reboot wasn’t something audiences wanted. They added that blaming the actor wouldn’t address the core problem with the movie itself.
Despite rumors that the Tron series is over, bringing back the character Sark was a huge moment for the visual effects team at Industrial Light & Magic. Director Joachim Rønning explained that recreating the original Tron Grid felt like achieving a major goal in VFX. Interestingly, the original film’s groundbreaking effects weren’t even considered for an Academy Award in 1982 because judges thought they were unfair.
The director also expressed excitement about potentially revisiting the character of Sark in future installments, seeing Julian Dillinger’s portrayal as a strong foundation for that continuation. He also shared his gratitude for everyone who supported the film by buying a ticket, acknowledging the uncertainty of success in today’s market and expressing hope that enough people would see it.
Tron: Ares is available on Prime Video in the United States.
