Even at 100 years old, Dick Van Dyke is in surprisingly good shape! The beloved actor, known for his role in Mary Poppins, shared on December 12th, just before his 100th birthday, that he’s remarkably free of aches and pains. He credits his wife, Arlene Silver, who’s very health-conscious, and says he still goes to the gym three times a week.
“I think that saved me from the pain. That’s good advice for anybody.”
However, that doesn’t mean everything is easy now. The actor, famous for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, said he wishes he still had the same level of energy and freedom of movement he used to.
“I’ve got one game leg from I don’t know what,” he added. “And dance — I still try to dance.”
Looking back on his career, Dick Van Dyke joked that while he’s spent over 70 years playing older characters, he’s never been as grumpy or difficult as they were.
“I don’t know any other 100-year-old,” he said playfully, “but I can speak for myself.”
For those interested in learning more about Dick Van Dyke, his new book, 100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life, offers insights into his health, career, and life advice. It was released on November 18th.
It’s strange, but even a lifetime isn’t long enough. A century just isn’t sufficient, and I, for one, intend to live even longer.
Dick Van Dyke Refused a Role in a Major Franchise

Buena Vista Distribution Company, Inc.
From beloved shows and movies like Mary Poppins, Bye Bye Birdie, and The Dick Van Dyke Show, to more recent projects such as Diagnosis: Murder, The Simpsons, and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, this celebrated actor has left a lasting impact on entertainment – despite turning down one very significant part.
He revealed on the Today show that he was offered the role of James Bond in the 1969 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, but he turned it down because of one main reason.
Dick Van Dyke remembers asking film producer Barbara Broccoli if she could detect his British accent, despite being from West Plains, Missouri.
He eventually thought it would have been a rewarding opportunity, but at the time, he was concerned his audience wouldn’t embrace it. The role was a significant departure from the type of comedy they were used to from him.
George Lazenby eventually landed the role, marking his single performance as James Bond in the long-running film series.
