How Supergirl’s DCU Movie Compares To The Woman Of Tomorrow Comic Explained By James Gunn & Director

Supergirl, the last daughter of Krypton, will star in her own movie as part of the new DC Universe in 2026. This will be the first time Kara Zor-El has headlined her own film since 1984, and it will bring a popular comic book storyline to life on the big screen. The movie is set within James Gunn’s DCU franchise.

At CCXP 2025, Jordan Williams from ScreenRant attended the Supergirl press conference where the first trailer was revealed. James Gunn and director Craig Gillespie were both present, and they discussed how the movie’s script was adapted from the comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Gillespie explained that he intentionally read Ana’s screenplay before the comic book, wanting to see how well the story translated. Since he was unfamiliar with the Supergirl universe, he believed he was an ideal test audience. Any questions he had, he could ask, and he praised Ana for crafting a compelling narrative.

While working on the Supergirl project, the director explained that the story’s direction was apparent to him, and he acknowledged the frequent comparisons to the Tom King book. He also complimented Ana Nogueira, noting that she brought a unique perspective to the adaptation, so those comparing it to the novel should expect differences.

Gunn praised the artwork in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, specifically highlighting Bilquis Evely’s contributions. He emphasized that Evely’s art was just as crucial to the book’s success as Tom King’s writing, and served as a major inspiration.

One major change for the 2026 adaptation is the inclusion of Jason Momoa as Lobo. The actor, previously known for playing Aquaman, is taking on a role he’s always wanted. Interestingly, this character wasn’t present in the original Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book.

We’ll have to wait and see if any more casting news emerges for Supergirl, as most of the filming took place on private sets and in studios. The movie’s trailer was released this week and gave fans a first look at how much of the King and Evely comic book series will be featured in the film.

I’m really intrigued by the new Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock. It sounds like this version will be quite different from what we’ve seen before, and I’m curious to see if audiences connect with the Woman of Tomorrow storyline. It’s a bold move for the DCU, and we’ll find out if it pays off when Supergirl hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
