If you enjoy legal thrillers, you’ll love adaptations of John Grisham‘s novels. Several of his books have become popular movies, including The Rainmaker, A Time to Kill, and The Firm. Right now, many fans’ favorite – the 1994 film The Client, which has a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – is available to watch for free on Tubi.
As a movie fan, I always found The Client really gripping. It starts with this young boy, Mark Sway, and his brother stumbling onto something terrible. He actually prevents a lawyer, Jerome Clifford, from committing suicide, and quickly realizes Clifford was mixed up with the mob. Apparently, Clifford decided ending his life was the only way to escape them, but Mark interrupts him. Sadly, even after Mark tries to help, Clifford ends up taking his own life, leaving the boys caught in a dangerous situation.
Ricky shuts down and is unable to speak. This makes Mark a target, as both the police and criminals believe he knows something about an old murder case. Fearing for his safety, Mark asks lawyer Regina “Reggie” Love (Susan Sarandon) for help. Initially hesitant, Reggie soon discovers her colleague, Roy Foltrigg (Tommy Lee Jones), is also pursuing the information the boy possesses, leading her to commit to protecting him at all costs. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film centers around this situation.
This thrilling story, adapted from a popular John Grisham novel, follows a young boy whose life is in danger after he accidentally learns crucial details about a politician’s murder. His only hope is his lawyer, who must protect him from both the Mafia and the FBI – but can she keep him safe?
1994’s ‘The Client’ Stands Out Due to Its Gripping Performances

Warner Bros.
By 1994, John Grisham was already a well-known author. The success of his novels The Firm and The Pelican Brief the previous year had made him popular with a wide audience, proving he could make legal thrillers captivating. His next book, The Client, continued this trend, demonstrating that his stories worked well as movies.
The film truly succeeds thanks to its three incredible lead actors. Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones, and young Jonathan Renfro, who was making his film debut, all deliver standout performances. Sarandon’s work was even recognized with an Academy Award nomination, and Jones convincingly portrays a determined lawyer willing to go to any lengths to uncover the truth. Renfro is particularly impressive as a surprisingly clever and unpredictable witness.
The film boasts a strong supporting cast alongside Renfro, Sarandon, and Jones, including notable actors like J.T. Walsh, Will Patton, Bradley Whitford, Kim Coates, William H. Macy, Anthony LaPaglia, Ossie Davis, and Anthony Edwards. It’s a solid sequel to A Time to Kill, another John Grisham novel brought to life by director Joel Schumacher, and like its predecessor, it became a highly popular legal drama of the 1990s.
