The DC Universe is preparing to introduce a character known for being a romantic interest of Supergirl – a character who happens to be a horse for a significant portion of his comic book history. It appears the upcoming adaptation may hint at this unusual backstory. DC Comics often features bizarre and unexpected storylines, particularly for characters with long and complex histories.
After 66 years of appearing in comics, Supergirl has a famously strange history. A prime example? A romantic storyline involving a hero who originally debuted as a horse – and is still largely known as Supergirl’s horse! With the DC Universe preparing to reintroduce this character, a new generation of fans is likely to discover this unusual plot.
Supergirl’s Comic Source Material Brings Back A Unique DC Character & References His Complicated History
The upcoming Supergirl series will be based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book storyline. The recently released trailer confirms this, as it introduces Ruthye, a key character from the comic, and appears to recreate several scenes directly from that story arc.
The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic brings back Comet, a character originally known as Supergirl’s super-horse (who can also take human form), and gives him a significant role in the story’s final battles.
Considering how much the upcoming DC Universe movie is borrowing from comic books, it’s not surprising to see the character Comet appear. However, including Comet presents a bit of a challenge because his story often revolves around a romantic relationship with Supergirl, something that’s been a key part of his character in the comics.
The story in Woman of Tomorrow acknowledges this past connection. When Comet risks his life for Supergirl, she tells Ruthye, “He told me because he loved… It doesn’t matter. It’s complicated. But I knew.” Considering this, it’s not too surprising Comet appears in Supergirl, though it does make you wonder how the movie will address their history and relationship.
Why The DCU Might Keep Comet Being In Love With Supergirl
The DC Universe (DCU) has shown a willingness to take risks with its adaptations of DC Comics, both in the stories it tells—like the potential to adapt ‘Salvation Run’ after the events of Peacemaker—and in the characters it features. It’s bringing to life lesser-known heroes from DC lore, such as Guy Gardner and Mr. Terrific, who haven’t had much screen time in live-action films before.
The story of Comet in DC Comics is definitely unusual and has famously confused fans, but it’s no stranger than many other parts of DC lore. The recent Woman of Tomorrow storyline treated this odd piece of Supergirl’s history with care, which suggests that Comet’s story could continue in the broader DC Universe if he appears in Supergirl.
