Jason Momoa’s DC Return Overshadowed ‘Supergirl’s Insane, Unrecognizable Villain Reveal

The recent trailer for Supergirl has everyone talking, but not just about the show’s heroine. Jason Momoa’s appearance as Lobo has quickly become a major focus. Fans have wanted Momoa to play Lobo for years, and it turns out he’s been a fan of the character just as long! He even mistakenly believed he was auditioning for the role of Lobo when he originally tried out for Aquaman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Now, after a decade, he’s finally getting the chance to play “The Main Man.” The question is, will Lobo end up stealing the spotlight from Supergirl‘s intended villain?

The trailer for Supergirl briefly shows the film’s villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts, alongside glimpses of Lobo and Krypto. Krem is a relatively new character, appearing in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comics only four years ago. This makes him one of the quickest comic characters to be adapted into a live-action movie villain, matched only by Bane. Because he isn’t as well-known as other DC villains and doesn’t have a major star playing him, Warner Bros. might be emphasizing Lobo more in their marketing.

Krem of the Yellow Hills, Explained

Krem of the Yellow Hills was created for the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. He’s considered a very dangerous killer throughout the galaxy, and he’s responsible for the death of a young girl named Ruthye’s father, which leads her to ask Supergirl to hunt him down. In the comic, Krem originally looked more like a regular human, with a red beard and a dashing appearance. This ordinary look was intentional, designed to emphasize how evil can be surprisingly commonplace and disguise itself in everyday people.

The TV show Supergirl has updated the character Krem of the Yellow Hills to look more like an alien. Instead of a typical human appearance with a red beard, Krem now has a face covered in bead-like bumps and glowing yellow eyes. This new design makes him resemble a classic space pirate, a departure from the medieval-inspired look of the original comics. Many viewers have noted the similarity between Krem’s redesign and Taserface from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, one of several connections Supergirl shares with James Gunn’s cosmic Marvel film.

Despite being Supergirl’s main enemy, Krem only appears briefly in the trailer. This is likely because the trailer is just a short teaser, and the story itself focuses on Supergirl and Ruthye chasing Krem, much like the original comic. The movie seems to be following that same pattern, potentially limiting Krem to a few important scenes. It will be interesting to see if Warner Bros. features Krem more prominently in future promotional materials, considering he’s a relatively new character and there were some production issues involving the actor who plays him, Matthias Schoenaerts.

Why Lobo Might Be Front and Center in ‘Supergirl’

Warner Bros.

On December 2nd, 2025, nine days before the first trailer for Supergirl came out, Matthias Schoenaerts received a six-month jail sentence, a €4,000 fine, and a year-long driving ban. He was caught driving without a valid license, which had been suspended in 2021. While not a major scandal – especially compared to the issues Warner Bros. faced with Ezra Miller and The Flash just two years prior – Schoenaerts’ imprisonment could make it difficult for him to promote Supergirl. This might lead Warner Bros. to focus even more attention on Jason Momoa’s character, Lobo.

Krem of the Yellow Hills is expected to be a villain who appears only in one story. However, Lobo could become a major character in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, potentially appearing in the planned Man of Tomorrow story or the Salvation Run adaptation hinted at in Season 2 of Peacemaker. It wouldn’t be surprising if Lobo even got his own series or movie. While not everyone knows him, Lobo is a popular character with fans. Jason Momoa, the actor playing Lobo, is also incredibly popular – there’s even a running joke on the TV show Ghost about how often people mention him. Warner Bros. knows Momoa is a big star they can use to promote their projects, so we can expect to see a lot of Lobo in marketing for Supergirl and the future of the DCU.
