The popular Skate skateboarding series from EA, which hasn’t had a new release since Skate 3 in 2010, is making a comeback today with a new game simply called Skate. Best of all, it’s free to play on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Today’s launch is an early version of the game, meaning it’s still in development. Players might find some bugs or unexpected issues. The developers at Full Circle are planning to add more features over time, including new game modes, tricks, leaderboards, and voice chat for parties.
The first Skate games required a purchase to play, but the new version is free to download and play online. EA plans to generate revenue through optional in-game purchases.
The first Skate game was released in 2007, followed by Skate 2 in 2009 and Skate 3 in 2010. A mobile version, Skate It, came out in 2008. After being on hold for over ten years, EA announced a new Skate game – also called Skate – in 2020.
The game is set in the made-up city of San Vansterdamn, which features four distinct neighborhoods. The developers at Full Circle have stated that the game world will constantly change and expand, with new areas, challenges, and music being added regularly during the early access period.
I’ve been waiting so long for a new Skate game! It feels amazing to finally have it back. In the meantime, though, the Tony Hawk series kept things going with awesome remakes like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, and more recently 3+4. It wasn’t just those two, though. We also got some really unique games like SkateBird, where you play as a bird doing tricks, and the super realistic skater sim, Session, which both came out in the last couple of years.
