James Gunn has announced the release date for the new Superman series on HBO Max, playfully referencing how David Corenswet accidentally revealed the news while jokingly imitating a character from a classic Superman film.
Even though some fans of the previous DC films disagree, *Superman* was actually a hit. It earned over $615 million globally, received positive reviews from both critics and audiences, and has allowed James Gunn’s new DC Universe to move forward with projects like *Supergirl*, *Lanterns*, and *Clayface* next year.
The film became available digitally sooner than expected, but not because it did poorly in cinemas. According to James Gunn, the early digital release was to give fans a chance to see it before the new season of *Peacemaker* – which continues the story – premiered.
James Gunn recently announced the release date for *Superman* on HBO Max, but David Corenswet accidentally revealed it even earlier.
Superman gets HBO Max streaming date
I’m so excited! Superman is finally coming to HBO Max this Friday, September 19th. It’s great news since it was released digitally just over a month ago on August 15th, so now I can watch it from the comfort of my couch!
James Gunn officially announced the release date on Threads, but not until David Corenswet shared a photo of himself with the Superman streaming screen visible in the background.

He jokingly referenced the character Eve Teschmacher, explaining that Sara Sampaio’s character had cleverly revealed important details about Lex Luthor to Jimmy Olsen through photos and selfies.
I’m wondering why the new episode is coming out so soon, and I think it might have something to do with *Peacemaker*. Apparently, episode 5 is the last one the critics were given early access to, so that’s probably why it’s dropping this week!
James Gunn has kept the details of episodes 6 through 8 tightly under wraps-he hasn’t even shown them to his own publicist. Combined with speculation about appearances by Superman or Lex Luthor, this is generating a lot of excitement and could draw even more viewers back to the film.
