The only potential issue with his announcement is that Jimmy Kimmel might not sign a new contract after May 2027. His future plans are still uncertain, as he’s known to change his mind about when he’ll retire.

After Jimmy Kimmel made comments about the person who attacked Kirk, the Federal Communications Commission, led by Chair Brendan Carr, urged Disney to take action against him. Broadcasters Nexstar and Sinclair supported this stance and stopped showing Jimmy Kimmel Live!, leading Disney to temporarily halt production of the show.
Disney executives and Jimmy Kimmel had discussions to resolve their differences, and Kimmel returned to his show on September 23rd with a heartfelt speech about the importance of free speech. This is because Paramount was waiting for the government to approve a merger with Skydance. Colbert’s last show will be in May 2026.

The comedian who hosts a late-night show on ABC has been doing so longer than any other current late-night host on a major network. Kimmel has mentioned retirement in the past, but he stopped discussing it frequently because he wasn’t sure when – or if – he’d actually retire.
With Jimmy Kimmel’s contract renewed for just one year, it’s likely this could be his final season hosting the show on ABC. The short-term renewal also allows the network to reassess the show’s costs and decide if continuing it past 2027 makes financial sense.
