First Look at Nicolas Cage, Bill Skarsgard in Lord of War Sequel

I’m a huge fan of this Academy Award winner, and I’ve always admired how fearlessly he takes on different kinds of roles. It’s amazing to see him revisiting a really challenging part he played two decades ago – it shows he’s still willing to push boundaries and take risks, and I really respect that!

Nicolas Cage appeared in the film in 2005. While the movie received mixed reviews when it was first released, a sequel has just been announced. Production on the follow-up began last month, and a first look at Nicolas Cage and new cast member Bill Skarsgård has recently been revealed.

Nicolas Cage is returning to play arms dealer Yuri Orlov, and Alexander Skarsgård has joined the cast as his son, Anton. Initial photos from filming show both actors in dark suits while shooting a scene outdoors.

The actor known for playing in Nosferatu is currently working on the popular franchise where he recently reprised his role as Pennywise the clown. This new project also gives him a chance to play a different kind of character, even though his role will still involve a confrontation with Cage’s character, Yuri.

Actor Alexander Skarsgård recently discussed his upcoming project on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, praising his co-star Nicolas Cage as a “legend.” He also revealed the film is scheduled to begin production next year (2025) and described the script as “great” and “fun.”

He described the character as a charming but awful person, and hinted that the first installment showed a cynical, satirical, and generally dark sense of humor where everyone is flawed. He enjoys finding humor in the actions of unlikeable characters and believes this new role will be enjoyable. Based on initial impressions, this character seems ideally suited to be the villain in John Wick: Chapter 4.

Andrew Niccol is directing the new film, and Laura Harrier (known for Spider-Man: Homecoming and BlacKkKlansman), Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049, The Girl in the Spider’s Web), and Greg Tarzan Davis (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Top Gun: Maverick) are also returning to star.

The new film, Lords of War, centers on Anton, who doesn’t just continue his father’s work as an arms dealer. He takes it a step further by building his own mercenary army to participate in conflicts in the Middle East, leading to a fierce and personal rivalry between father and son—even extending to competition over romantic interests.

Lord of War Was Extremely Underrated

The announcement of a sequel was unexpected, given the 2005 crime thriller wasn’t a big hit. While the film featured a compelling performance by Nicolas Cage and an intriguing plot, it didn’t gain much attention and received mixed reviews. Many viewers and critics found the movie’s central theme unclear, despite Cage’s strong acting. The original cast also included Jared Leto, Bridget Moynahan, Ethan Hawke, and Eamonn Walker.

Despite receiving better reviews from general audiences (84%) than from critics (62%), the movie Lord of War wasn’t a financial success. It earned $72.6 million worldwide, but cost $50 million to make.

Lords of War doesn’t have a release date yet.
