System Shock Remake Coming To Switch 2 And Original Switch This Month

Nightdive Studios confirmed that the System Shock remake is coming to both Switch and the new Switch 2 on December 18th. They explained that a key choice involving the Unreal Engine was essential to making the game work on the original Switch.

In a recent YouTube video, Nightdive Studios revealed their initial plan to build the System Shock remake for the Switch 2 using Unreal Engine 5. However, they then considered supporting both the original Switch and the new Switch 2. They discovered Unreal Engine 4 was a viable option, leading to a major change in their development approach. Developer Thomas Curnow explained the primary reason for this switch was to ensure a more stable game.

The video showed that Nightdive Studios quickly proved their decision to use Unreal Engine 4 was the right one. They were able to create working versions of the game for both the Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 within 48 hours. Producer Justin Khan explained their goal: “We want to make sure the game feels exactly like we remember it.”

The updated version of System Shock was initially released on computers in 2023, and became available on PlayStation and Xbox consoles in May 2024. Nightdive Studios’ work to bring the classic game back to life was largely praised by players.

Nightdive Studios released a remastered version of System Shock 2 for PC and consoles, including the Nintendo Switch, earlier in 2024. Nightdive became part of Atari after being purchased by the company in 2023.
