If you’re a Netflix subscriber and want to watch one of the most highly-rated Western mystery thrillers of recent years, you’ll need to do so soon. Quentin Tarantino’s film is being removed from the platform on January 25, 2026.
Set in the aftermath of the Civil War, this story follows eight enigmatic strangers who find themselves seeking shelter together during a dangerous blizzard. Released in 2015, the narrative explores how these individuals, including Walton Goggins, discover that their shared predicament is overshadowed by their own troubled histories, which threaten to resurface.
Quentin Tarantino initially planned a movie with Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Kerry Washington. He later decided that the main character, Django, didn’t quite fit the narrative, so he transformed the project into The Hateful Eight. Interestingly, some actors who appeared in the earlier version, Django Unchained, like Samuel L. Jackson and Walton Goggins, also ended up starring in The Hateful Eight.
When The Hateful Eight came out, it immediately impressed audiences and critics with its unique style, thanks to director and writer Quentin Tarantino. Even ten years later, it remains highly rated, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ status on Rotten Tomatoes with a 74% approval rating from over 330 critics. Viewers love it even more, giving it a 77% rating based on over 50,000 votes.
Critics generally liked The Hateful Eight, enjoying its combination of action, comedy, and intense violence. While many praised the film, some felt the editing and nearly three-hour runtime were issues, and others had concerns about how it portrayed race relations. Despite these criticisms, The Hateful Eight performed well at the box office, earning over $161 million globally on a budget of $44–62 million.
Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight was a hit with Hollywood critics and awards bodies. Jennifer Jason Leigh won Best Supporting Actress, and Robert Richardson received the award for Best Cinematography. The film also earned Ennio Morricone an Academy Award for Best Original Score – a first for Tarantino, as The Hateful Eight was his first movie to have a completely original score.
Another Tarantino Masterpiece is Experiencing Its Own Renaissance
Okay, so The Hateful Eight is leaving Netflix soon, which is a bummer, but awesome news for Tarantino fans like me! Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair – that’s the super-long version combining both Vol. 1 and 2 – is getting really popular again, especially after they showed it in theaters. People are loving it even more than the original two parts separately! It’s a seriously epic, over four-hour movie, and it’s great to see it getting so much attention.
Besides Kill Bill, Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight has also been re-edited after its initial release. In 2019, an extended four-part version of the film was released on Netflix. It wasn’t immediately known whether this longer version would also be removed from Netflix next month.
The Hateful Eight leaves Netflix on Jan. 25, 2026.
