Sega is once again challenging Nintendo, this time with its new Sonic Racing game. The trailer for ‘Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ seems to be directly competing with the popular ‘Mario Kart’ series.
The commercial immediately evokes the familiar rivalry between gaming consoles. It starts with a retro, pixelated scene reminiscent of Mario Kart, and a voiceover asks: “Everyone knows that famous kart racing game – it’s fantastic. But what if you could take the experience to a whole new level?”
The trailer then shows Sonic racing on vibrant tracks, demonstrating how players can customize their cars and play with others on different platforms. These scenes are intercut with exciting footage of a real race car speeding around a track.
The scene shifts to a comical shot of an old camper van with a TV bolted to the back. On the screen, a Mario Kart World game is running, and, adding to the absurdity, a tortoise is slowly making its way across the road in front of the van.
Sega reawakens console war with Nintendo
Just when things were already bad for the plumber, his van started smoking, and Sega’s voice sarcastically highlighted the game’s main appeal: “Ever wish you could just drive freely?” Almost immediately, a fast sports car sped by, completely overshadowing Mario Kart World.
The new trailer is a hit with fans, sparking a lot of excitement and playful discussion about a long-standing rivalry. One fan commented, “Sega really didn’t hold back!” while another joked about a recent Nintendo presentation, suggesting the trailer explained a certain game’s absence.
Sega is making it clear that their new racing game isn’t just another Mario Kart clone. By mentioning Mario Kart and including popular characters from other franchises like Hatsune Miku and Joker from Persona, Sega emphasizes that their game offers a unique experience.
CrossWorlds will be available on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC starting September 25, 2025. A version for the new Nintendo Switch 2 console is planned for release in early 2026.
