An advertisement featuring Sydney Sweeney from July 2025 caused confusion because she playfully mixed up the words ‘genes’ and ‘jeans.’ Some viewers thought the ad suggested she was attractive due to her genetics – like her hair and eye color – and that she was linking attractiveness to the clothes she wore. In the ad, she stated, “My jeans are blue,” after explaining that genes determine traits inherited from parents. Sweeney avoided addressing the controversy while promoting her films Christy and Americana. However, in a November GQ interview, she clarified she simply enjoys wearing jeans and that was the extent of the ad’s message. She explained she wasn’t bothered by the backlash, stating, “I knew what that ad was for, and it was great jeans.” She added that she only speaks out on issues she feels strongly about, and this wasn’t one of them.
