While Zoë Kravitz might not return as Catwoman (Selina Kyle) in the next Batman movie, DC Studios has a way to address this loss. Kravitz’s portrayal of the iconic character in the 2022 hit film The Batman – a role previously played by stars like Michelle Pfeiffer and Anne Hathaway – was a highlight for many. Her departure from the sequel is surprising, especially considering that she’s noted her character’s story was just beginning in the first film, which could lead to issues with the overall story and disappoint fans.
News that Scarlett Johansson is in talks to join The Batman Part II eased some worries about Zoë Kravitz potentially leaving the series. Fans immediately began speculating about which villains director Matt Reeves might feature and which roles Johansson would be perfect for. While rumors suggest she’ll play a new love interest for Bruce Wayne, the strong connection between Kravitz and Robert Pattinson in The Batman was a key reason Kravitz was cast as Catwoman. If Kravitz doesn’t appear in the second film but returns for a potential third – which could be several years away, considering the delays in getting The Batman Part II started – that gap would be significant. Luckily, DC has already created a way to keep Catwoman a relevant character and fans engaged, even if they don’t fully recognize it.
Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman Needs Her Own Show Like ‘The Penguin’

Warner Bros. Pictures
Catwoman is a hugely popular character in the Batman universe, and Zoë Kravitz is a well-known and successful actress. Delaying her return until a potential third Batman film risks upsetting a large portion of fans. To keep her character relevant, especially if she doesn’t appear at all in the second film, DC should follow the example of The Penguin and create a spin-off show for Catwoman. This is a smart move both creatively and financially. Kravitz has starred in major franchises like X-Men: First Class, Divergent, Mad Max: Fury Road, Fantastic Beasts, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, proving her box office appeal. She’s also received critical acclaim, including an Emmy nomination in 2025 for The Studio, and has experience in successful television shows like Big Little Lies. With over seven million followers on Instagram, Kravitz clearly attracts a large audience. She’s not just a talented performer, she’s a draw for viewers.
As a film fan, I truly think a Catwoman spin-off series is a brilliant idea. Zoë Kravitz absolutely killed it as Selina Kyle, and with The Penguin already proving a massive hit – nine Emmys and over five million viewers in just four days! – there’s clearly an appetite for these corner-of-the-Bat-verse stories. Plus, Kravitz herself has said Selina’s story isn’t over, and leaving Gotham at the end of The Batman feels like a perfect springboard for a solo show. It would keep her relevant even if she isn’t in the next Batman film. What’s even more exciting is that she’s now a director, having just made her debut with Blink Twice! She could bring a really unique vision to the project, both in front of and behind the camera. Honestly, with Netflix acquiring Warner Bros., and a dedicated fanbase already in place, a Catwoman series feels like a guaranteed win for everyone involved. It’s a no-brainer, really – expand the universe, give fans what they want, and give Netflix a potential blockbuster.
Is Catwoman’s Absence in ‘The Batman Part II’ a Necessary Evil?

Warner Bros. Animation
I’ve been following the news about The Batman Part II, and it sounds like Catwoman might not be returning, which is a little disappointing. But honestly, it might make sense considering who they’re reportedly casting. There’s a lot of buzz that Scarlett Johansson could be playing someone totally unexpected – not a classic villain, but Andrea Beaumont, also known as the Phantasm. She’s a really interesting character from the Batman: Mask of the Phantasm animated movie – she was Bruce Wayne’s fiancée, and a complex figure with a secret life. If Johansson is playing Phantasm, it explains a lot. Phantasm is a fan favorite, and her story is pretty involved, so it would need a lot of screen time. That probably means there just isn’t room for Catwoman to have the same role she did in the first movie. It seems like director Matt Reeves is willing to take a creative risk, and I’m actually excited to see how it plays out!
Adding Catwoman just to please fans could lead to the new Batman movie having too many villains, something similar films like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 struggled with. However, the director has already successfully balanced several characters – the Riddler, Penguin, Falcone, and Catwoman, plus a cameo from the Joker – so he might have good narrative reasons for including her. To keep fans happy, giving Catwoman her own movie would be smart, otherwise bringing her back in a future Batman film could be poorly received.
