Diddy’s Mom Responds After Netflix’s New Docuseries Includes Claims About Her Being An ‘Abusive’ Parent

The new Netflix documentary, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, is causing a stir, with people featured in the show now speaking out. Diddy recently criticized Netflix, claiming they used footage without permission. The documentary, produced by 50 Cent, includes interviews with individuals making accusations against Diddy, and also alleges that his mother, Janice Combs, was an abusive parent. Now, Janice is responding to those claims and expressing her disapproval of the documentary’s portrayal.

The claims came from two of Diddy’s longtime friends, Tim Patterson and Kirk Burrows. Patterson stated that Janice Combs was physically abusive towards her son and insisted it was serious. Burrows added that he saw Sean Combs slap Janice after a celebrity basketball game in 1991. Janice responded with a statement released on December 6th, strongly denying the accusations and saying she never abused her stepson.

I’m writing to address false claims made in the Netflix documentary, “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” which premiered on December 2, 2025. The documentary contains inaccurate information about my son Sean’s childhood and family, and appears designed to mislead viewers and damage our reputation. Specifically, the film falsely portrays me as an abusive parent. As I’ve said before, I was a single mother who worked multiple jobs – sometimes three or four at a time – to give Sean a good life and education. I raised him with love and dedication, not abuse.

Earlier this year, Tim Patterson, also known as “Dawg,” made claims about how Janice Combs raised her son, Sean. He alleged that when Sean was growing up, Janice hosted parties that were sexually suggestive. Patterson suggested these parties may have influenced Sean’s behavior and led to the controversial “Freak Off” parties he threw later in life. Janice denied Patterson’s accusations and offered her own perspective on her relationship with her son.

Mr. Tim Patterson’s statements about Sean’s life and my relationship with my son are false and appear designed to generate publicity for the series. In reality, I deeply loved and supported Sean throughout his life. I remember him as a respectful, hardworking child and teenager who consistently strived for and achieved great things.

Ever since Sean Combs started facing legal problems, his mother has been publicly defending him and challenging how the media has covered the accusations against him. Although she’s admitted her son isn’t flawless, she’s still disputed stories she feels misrepresent his character. She has also confirmed that he did, in fact, hit her.

The claims made by Kirk Burrows – that my son slapped me after the upsetting events at City College on December 28, 1991 – are simply untrue. It was a deeply sad day for everyone involved. To use this tragedy and invent false stories to try and get something he doesn’t deserve is wrong, shocking, and incredibly disrespectful. My son has always been a caring and responsible son, consistently making sure I’m well taken care of, managing my health, and providing financial support. I demand a public retraction of these false and misleading statements.

The four-part documentary series, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, explores the life and career of the rapper, Sean Combs, and the recent legal troubles he’s facing. A key issue in the series is how the filmmakers obtained footage of Combs, which was filmed just days before his 2024 arrest. Combs claims the video was taken illegally, but director Alexandria Stapleton maintains it was obtained lawfully.

Diddy is also upset about 50 Cent’s involvement in the documentary. 50 Cent, who publicly criticized Diddy during his recent trial and opposed his potential pardon, announced his plans for the show last year. He’s stated his motivation wasn’t simply their long-standing feud, but a desire to show that the hip-hop community won’t tolerate Combs’ alleged behavior.

Sean Combs is still serving his four-year sentence at Fort Dix prison in New Jersey. Although his documentary, The Reckoning, is still on Netflix, it’s currently unknown if the streaming service will respond to the public reaction. It also remains to be seen if Janice Combs will take further action if the statements she considers misleading aren’t corrected.
