Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 1
To be honest, Jonathan Byers hasn’t always been a standout character for me in Stranger Things. He often comes across as quiet, sad, and lost in thought. However, a recent theory about the final season suggests the creators might give Jonathan a particularly emotional and impactful storyline.
Like any main character on Stranger Things, Jonathan is in danger and could face a tragic end, especially considering the serious threats the group is currently dealing with. It would be particularly heartbreaking if he were to die right after Nancy finally realizes how deeply he feels for her.
Stranger Things S5 Theory: Nancy Finds The Ring Right Before Jonathan Dies
The central idea revolves around a secret engagement ring Jonathan received from Murray in season 5, episode 3 of Stranger Things. Jonathan hasn’t proposed to Nancy yet, and he’s been waiting for the right moment. However, with Nancy’s sister Holly recently taken by Vecna and both her parents hospitalized, the timing is incredibly difficult.
A popular theory about the upcoming season 5 of Stranger Things suggests Jonathan could become Vecna’s next victim, possibly falling into a similar trance as we saw with other characters in season 4. This raises the question: how would Nancy attempt to rescue him?
During the fourth season of the show, Max Mayfield was able to avoid Vecna’s control by listening to her favorite song, Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.”
Following that line of thought, we can picture Nancy desperately looking for something – anything – to save Jonathan from the fate of Vecna’s previous victims. While searching through his belongings, she discovers a John Coltrane cassette case, and inside, the ring – making her realize he was going to propose.
The most heartbreaking part would be Nancy reaching Jonathan too late, with the ring symbolizing all the unspoken feelings he carried. Even viewers who weren’t invested in Jonathan’s story would likely feel the emotional impact. Overall, this theory feels sadly believable.
Stranger Things Has Already Hinted At A Sad End To Jonathan & Nancy’s Relationship
Even if Jonathan and Nancy don’t face a terrible fate, their relationship is already on thin ice, and a proposal likely wouldn’t be enough to fix things.
Steve has said things haven’t been great between him and Jonathan, and Jonathan hasn’t disagreed. Plus, at the end of Stranger Things season 4, Jonathan wasn’t truthful about getting accepted to Emerson College, which showed that he and Steve were starting to grow apart and their future plans were changing.
Although Jonathan and Nancy still seem to care about each other, their romantic connection appears to have faded. Whether or not the rumors about a ring or a tragic event are true, their relationship may simply be ending.
Stranger Things season 5, Volume 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
