The White House is facing criticism for using a clip of Sabrina Carpenter from her Saturday Night Live appearance. This comes after they received backlash for pairing her song “Juno” with video footage of an ICE raid.
The White House shared a video clip that altered a joke from a recent Saturday Night Live appearance by Sarah Carpenter. In the original clip, Carpenter playfully threatened to arrest someone for being “too hot“. The White House version replaced that phrase with “illegal” and then showed footage of ICE arrests. The post’s caption read, “PSA: If you’re a criminal illegal, you WILL be arrested & deported.”
Earlier this week, Carpenter strongly criticized a video, calling it “evil and disgusting.” She demanded her music not be used to promote what she considers a harmful political viewpoint, stating, “Do not ever use my music to support your inhumane agenda.” Carpenter is one of many artists now objecting to their work being featured in White House videos.
Immediately following Carpenter’s comments, White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson released a strong statement. She firmly stated that the administration wouldn’t apologize for ICE’s actions, explaining that they were rightfully deporting dangerous criminals. Jackson then appeared to question the singer’s understanding, suggesting she was unintelligent for taking a different stance.
We have no regrets about removing dangerous criminals – including those who have committed murder, rape, and child abuse – from our country. Those who would defend such individuals are either unintelligent or lacking in sound judgment.
Carpenter isn’t alone – several musicians have had their songs used in White House posts without their consent. Recently, both Kenny Loggins and Olivia Rodrigo publicly criticized the Trump Administration for inappropriately using their music.
A video falsely using Kenny Loggins’ song “Danger Zone” showed Donald Trump in a crude and offensive situation involving protesters. Despite requests to take it down, the video is still posted on Trump’s Truth Social account.
Olivia Rodrigo publicly criticized Donald Trump and the Department of Homeland Security after they used her song, “All-American Bitch,” in a video promoting self-deportation. She called the post “racist” and “hateful” and asked for it to be taken down.
