Netflix is acquiring Warner Bros., and this has everyone wondering what will happen with the planned new Harry Potter series. Since Warner Bros. owns HBO Max, Netflix will soon control all of its shows and movies. This raises questions about the future of several HBO projects currently in development, including ‘The Pitt,’ potential ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-offs, and the highly anticipated Harry Potter remake.

For decades, Harry Potter has been hugely important to Warner Bros., so the new TV series based on the original films is a major event. HBO has a reputation for creating high-quality TV shows, like Game of Thrones, that are both popular and successful. This is why the Harry Potter series on HBO seemed so promising. However, with the franchise now moving to Netflix – a company known for a different style of television – many fans are a little worried about its future.

Because of the popularity of the Harry Potter films with Warner Bros., a new Harry Potter TV series was expected to be a major hit for HBO. This large-scale project likely played a significant role in Netflix’s decision to make an offer to buy Warner Bros.

A Harry Potter TV show on Netflix would be very different than one on HBO. While Netflix makes good, expensive shows, it’s not known for the same level of prestige as HBO. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem likely the show will start as a Netflix original. Warner Bros. hasn’t been acquired by Netflix yet, and that deal will take a while to finalize.

The Harry Potter TV Show May Premiere Before HBO Max Fully Merges With Netflix

As a movie and TV lover, I’m really excited about the news that Netflix is bringing HBO Max content into the mix! Honestly, it’s still a bit unclear how exactly they’ll do it. I’m guessing it might work similarly to how Disney did with Hulu – maybe we’ll just see an ‘HBO Max’ section pop up on the Netflix homepage where we can watch all the Warner Bros. stuff. Netflix has also said they want to keep Warner Bros. running as it is now, so it’s also possible HBO Max will still exist as its own separate app alongside everything on Netflix. We’ll have to wait and see, but it sounds like a lot more content is heading our way!

Even so, we probably won’t see any of this until after the first season of Harry Potter has aired. Filming started in the summer of 2025 and is expected to continue until around the middle of 2026. Considering HBO’s major shows usually take six to nine months to finish after filming, the first season of Harry Potter might be released between January and April of 2027.

Netflix now expects to finalize the Warner Bros. acquisition by the third quarter of 2026. Only then will they be able to combine HBO Max’s content with their own. Netflix estimates the full integration will take 12 to 18 months, potentially finishing between January and April 2027. Although a Harry Potter premiere on Netflix is possible, launching such a large series on a new platform during this transition wouldn’t be the best timing.

Harry Potter Will Be A Netflix Franchise Eventually

It’s safe to say Netflix will want to be clearly recognized for its involvement with the Harry Potter franchise. Being connected to such a popular project is a major benefit, particularly if the show does well. Over time, we’ll likely see Netflix’s branding appear more prominently in advertising and promotions as the Harry Potter TV series becomes a key part of what the streaming service offers.

The HBO name is well-respected, which is why renaming HBO Max to just ‘Max’ didn’t work well. Removing the HBO brand was a bad move, and Netflix will likely understand that. Taking away HBO’s connection to the Harry Potter TV series could be a serious error. Plus, the Harry Potter movies all prominently feature the Warner Bros. logo, which fans associate with the franchise. Netflix needs to be careful as it moves forward.
